Mari Askvik (Mezzo-soprano)

Born: November 9, 1988 - Leikanger (Sogn og Fjordane), Norway

The Norwegian mezzo-soprano, Mari Askvik, obtained her Bachelor of Music degree in Classical singing performance (1.half) from The Grieg Academy of Music in Bergen (2007-2010); her Bachelor of Music degree in Opera (2.half) from The Norwegian National Academy of Music and The Opera Academy in Oslo (2010-2012); and her Master of Music degree in in Opera from The Norwegian National Academy of Music and The Opera Academy in Oslo (2012-2014). At the Opera Academy she has performed roles such as Cherubino in Le nozze di Figaro (W.A. Mozart), Rosina in Il barbiere di Siviglia (Rossini), Angelina in La Cenerentola (Rossini), Melide in L’Ormindo by Cavalli, Ottone in L'incoronazione di Poppea (Monteverdi) and Mother in Mavra (Igor Stravinsky). In March 2014 she had her Masters exam performance as Dorabella in Cosi fan tutte by W.A. Mozart at The Norwegian National Opera & Ballett.

This autumn (2017) Mari Askvik will appear at several festivals as well as doing Lola in Cavalleria Rusticana by Mascagni and 2. Witch in Dido and Aneas by Purcell at RingsakerOperaen. In winter 2018 she will revisit Operaen i Kristiansund as Mercédès in Carmen by Georges Bizet. During the last seasons she has guested Opera Østfold (2017) as the 2. dame in Die Zauberflöte by W.A. Mozart at the outdoor stage at Fredriksten Fortress, Haugesund Kammeropera (2016) and RingsakerOperaen (2015) as Mercédès in Carmen by G. Bizet, Operaen i Kristiansund (2014) as Alice in Lucia di Lammermoor by Donizetti, and the OT Theater in Rotterdam (2016) as Xerxes in excerpts from Xerxes by George Frideric Handel.

Mari Askvik has been part of several contemporary productions, such as the premieres of Icarus by Evelin Seppar at Conservatorium van Amsterdam (2014), Schnitzler´s Dreams - an installative opera by Marieke Dobewall (2015) and Ad Undas – Solaris korrigert by Øyvind Mæland at the National Opera & Ballett in Oslo (2013). In November 2016 she guested Masque Kammeropera in their production of Nouvelle Aventures by Ligeti.

Mari Askvik is a sought after soloist in oratorios and sacred works, from Baroque to contemporary music. She has been a member of Det Norske Solistkor (Director: Grete Pedersen) since 2015 and is also a member of the early music ensemble Christian IV's Vokalensemble in Copenhagen. She currently lives in Oslo, Norway.
