Daniel Auchincloss (Tenor)

Born: Toronto, Canada

The Canadian tenor, Daniel Auchincloss, studied at the University of Toronto, and completed the Masters in Music program at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama. After settling in the UK in 1995, he first worked as a Lay Clerk in St George's Chapel, Windsor. He moved from this post to perform with many British ensembles, including The English Concert, the Sixteen, The King’s Consort, The London Handel Orchestra, the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment and the BBC Singers. He currently studies with Diane Forlano.

Daniel Auchincloss possesses a high tenor voice of great rarity, and his extensive repertoire – from medieval to contemporary - has included a number of haute-contre roles. He is ideally suited to the special demands of the baroque repertoire, and sang many performances of 20th Century repertoire during his years with the BBC Singers.

Daniel Auchincloss has performed as a soloist with such groups as the City of London Sinfonia conducted by Richard Hickox, Purcell Quartet, Britten Sinfonia and Gabrieli Consort. During Easter 2001, he was a soloist in a tour of J.S. Bach's St. Matthew Passion (BWV 244) with the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment conducted by Sir Roger Norrington, and subsequently sang again for Roger Norrington with the Camerata Academica Salzburg in Rome. His repertoire ranges from medieval to contemporary (including participation in the World Premiere of a commission by Francis Grier) with an emphasis on early music and recent performances have included a number of haute-contre roles.

Daniel Auchincloss' engagements have included the role of Damon in George Frideric Handel’s Acis and Galatea with the Gabrieli Consort, the role of Eumete in Monteverdi’s Il ritorno d’Ulisse in patria under the musical direction of Michael Chance, and Antonio Vivaldi’s Jubilate, o amoeni chori with the King’s Consort. Recent engagements have included his BBC Promenade Concerts début in Monteverdi’s 1610 Vespers with The King’s Consort, a tour and recording on Deutsche Grammophon of Biber’s Requiem in F minor with the Gabrieli Consort, a tour of Charpentier’s Messe de Minuit with the Gabrieli Consort conducted by Paul McCreesh, a tour and recording on Harmonia Mundi of Biber’s Missa Christi Resurgentis with the English Concert, La Pythonisse in Charpentier’s David et Jonathas with the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment (under Emmanuelle Haïm), Damon in G.F. Handel’s Acis and Galatea and the Angel in Charpentier’s Canticum in nativitatem Domini with the Gabrieli Consort, and Eumete in Monteverdi’s Il ritorno d’Ulisse in patria, under the musical direction of Michael Chance.

Daniel Auchincloss is featured on a number of recordings, including a recording of Bach Cantatas for Radio Svizzera di lingua Italianna in Lugano conducted by Diego Fasolis, and has taken part in the Complete Monteverdi Sacred Music recordings with the King’s Consort for Hyperion.

Engagements in 2004-2005 include his BBC Promenade Concerts debut in Monteverdi’s 1610 Vespers with The King’s Consort, a tour and recording on Deutsche Grammophon of Biber’s Requiem in F minor with the Gabrieli Consort, and a tour and recording on Harmonia Mundi of Biber’s Missa Christi Resurgentis with the English Concert.
