In 1968 as Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, NYC marked its 100th birthday, it set out to celebrate its history and the rich tradition of music in the Lutheran Church. Drawing from the high level of music performance in NYC, "Evenings with Johann S" was established based on the German service of Vespers for which the great Lutheran composer J.S. Bach prepared and rendered so many of his cantatas. It was the first series of its kind in the western hemisphere.
Today, 41 seasons later, Bach Vespers at Holy Trinty (= BVHT) continues to present Bach’s cantatas and other great works in worship! The Bach Choir, Soloists and Bach Players (on Baroque period instruments) are composed of professional musicians from the New York region and are directed by Cantor Rick Erickson. Bach Vespers at Holy Trinity has been named "A Cultural Landmark" by the New York Landmarks Conservancy.
Chronology of Bach Vespers' Directors:
John Weaver 1968-1970
Frederick Grimes 1970-1992
Rick Erickson 1992-Present.
In addition to the regular Sunday evening services this season (2008-2009) the Bach Vespers are also presenting a series of chamber concerts featuring a number of our artists. They are titled Fourth Mondays Concerts and as the name implies, they will take place on the 4th Monday of each month. |
