James Barbagallo (Piano)

Born: 1952 - Pittsburg, California, USA
Died: Early 1996 - San Leandro, California, USA

The American pianist, James Barbagallo, began formal training in music at the age of 9. He earned bachelor's and master's degrees at Juilliard, and in 1982 won the bronze medal in the 7th Tchaikovsky International Piano Competition.

James Barbagallo toured widely in concert and recital, was a founding member of the Amadeus Trio, and made numerous recordings for the Naxos / Marco Polo label, including an album of 14 stunningly realized Bach-Siloti piano transcriptions. Its first recording sessions were held in late 1995. In early 1996, James returned to California to complete them. He died of a heart attack, at age 43, the very morning the recording was to have been finished. The project was left incomplete.
