Lya De Barberiis (Piano)

Born: Lecce, Italy

The Italian pianist, Lya De Barberiis, was born in Lecca but she lives in Rome for a long time. She studied under the guidance of Alessandro Longo (who revised all the Scarlatti’s Sonatas) at the Conservatory of Naples, gaining her piano diploma at the age of 15 with the highest distinction (summa cum laude). The she attended the Accademia Santa Cecilia in Rome, the perfectionning school of piano of Alfredo Casella and that of ensemble music of Arturo Bonucci; the same schools with the same teachers she attended in the Chigiana Academy in Sienna, Afterwards she a winner of many piano competitions and was granted a scholarship by the French government so that was admitted to the École de Perfetionnement des Virtuoses held in Paris by the great pianist Marguerite Long.

Lya De Barberiis started her concert career at the age of 9. She has performed all over the world as a soloist, with ensembles and with many famous orchestra under prominent conductors. Her repertoire is very wide and includes piano music of old times until today. Many Italian composers have chosen her for the first performances of their musical works as Alfredo Casella, Ildebrando Pizzetti, Gianfrancesco Malpiero, Nino Rota, etc. Many of them have also dedicated their compositions to her.

Lya De Barberiis has recorded the complete piano music of Petrassi, Luigi Dallapiccola and A. Casella, and the sonatas of Cherubini on a forte-piano, an original instrument of the time of the composer, as well as the piano music of Mussorgsky, all with the Fonit-Cetra Inc. She has also appeared in many as well as broadcasts, in Italy and abroad.

Lya De Barberiis is professor of piano at the Accademia Santa Cecilia in Rome. For her advocacy of the music of Italian composers, including A. Casella, Pizzetti, Cammarota, Petrassi and Gian-Francesco Malipiero, she was awarded the honour of Commendatore della Republica Italiana. She has also been awarded the gold medal for culture and art of the Italian Ministry of Public Instruction.
