Winfried Berger (Conductor, Organ)

Born: April 21, 1954 - Coburg, Germany

The German conductor and organist, Winfried Berger, was member of the Windsbacher Knabenchor from 1962 to 1970. 1972 it was accepted as young student to the Musikhochschule Detmold, department of Münster. In 1973 he passed the human exam at the Kardinal-von-Galen-Gymnasium in Münster. In 1974 finished the music teacher studies in Münster with exam for organ with Wolfgang Klare) and in 1975 with the appropriate exam for piano (with Professor Emil Schmidt). He continued his studies at the Musikhochschule Köln with the teachers Peter Neumann (organ), Professor Günter Ludwig (piano) and Professor Hugo Ruf (harpsichord). In 1977 he passed the A-exam for church music, in 1979 the maturity examination for organ and in 1984 the maturity examination for harpsichord.

From 1981 to 1984 Winfried Berger was Kantor at the Neuen Pauluskirche in Essen, afterwards Thomaeorganist in Soest and at the Predigerseminar of the Westfälischen Landeskirche. At the Institut für Musikdidaktik der Westfälischen Wilhelms-Universität Münster he taught piano and organ from 1982 to 1990. He created in 1983 together with Anna Kuwertz the Akademien für Orgelspiel und Körperarbeit, from 1986 to 1998 the "Soester Orgelakademie", and in 1992 the "Orgelakademie Kloster Steinfeld ". Likewise since 1992 he is a church musician at the Erlöserkirche Münster and concomitantly director of the Heinrich-Schütz-Chor Münster. Concert tours have led him particularly to Europe and to Israel.

Several CD recordings of Baroque organ music were released by Musicom in Münster. In the course of his educational work Winfried Berger wrote in several technical periodicals. In co-operation with Professor Busch he accomplished at the end of the 1980's several international conferences over questions of organ instruction. At the beginning of the 1990's he created the Münsteraner Musikern die Improvisations and the performing group "Magic Circle". In 1997 appeared the first CD of improvised music on Schloß Nordkirchen.
