Lars Johansson Brissman (Baritone)

Born: Stockholm, Sweden

The Swedish baritone, Lars Johansson Brissman, studied singing at the Royal University College of Music in Stockholm, and the University College of Opera in Stockholm, graduating in the spring of 2001. He has been awarded Kristina Nilsson Award, Joel Berglund Award, and the prestigious Royal Swedish Academy of Music Award.

Early assignments included The Gambler, De blåsta rivalerna, and Hertig Magnus & sjöjungfrun at the Vadstena Opera Academy. He has worked with conductors such as Olof Boman, Herbert Böck, Peter Dijkstra, Eric Ericson, Daniel Harding, Tönu Kaljuste, Andrew Parrott, Joshua Rifkin, Gustaf Sjökvist and Mark Tatlow. He has made a number of recordings with the Swedish Radio Choir and Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra.

Recent opera engagements have included Plutone in Monteverdi’s L’Orfeo as well as Soldat 2 / Famigliaro 3 / Liberto / Consolo in Monteverdi’s L’incoronazione di Poppea at the Drottningholm Festival in Stockholm, Shaunard in La Bohème and Lars-Edward in the world premiere of Carl Unander-Scharin’s Hummelhonung at the Royal Swedish Opera, Polyphemos in George Frideric Handel’s Acis and Galatea in Oslo with the Norwegian Baroque Orchestra, Nathan in Staale Kleiberg’s David and Bathsheba in Trondheim, Donner in Das Rheingold, Guglielmo in W.A. Mozart's Cosi fan tutte, Baron Mirka Zeta in Die lustige Witwe as well as Ulf and Kark in Ivar Hallströms Den bergtagna at Folkoperan in Stockholm. He has also participated in staged performances of J.S. Bach’s Christmas Oratorio (BWV 248) with Piteå Opera.

Lars Johansson Brissman is one of Scandinavia's most sought after concert singers and he is a frequent guest with the major orchestras and festivals. He has also appeared in the USA, Germany, Italy, France, Russia, Poland, and Estonia. He has an unusually wide repertoire including works by Monteverdi, Purcell, J.S. Bach, G.F. Handel, Antonio Vivaldi, W.A. Mozart, Haydn, Rossini, Johannes Brahms, Gabriel Fauré, Maurice Duruflé, Rosenberg, Lars-Erik Larsson, Arthur Honegger, Arvo Pärt and a large number of contemporary composers.

Engagements in the 2012-2013 season included Liconte and Caronte in Orlando paladino at the Drottningholm Festival in Stockholm, Aeneas in staged performances of Purcell's Dido and Aeneas with Trondheim Symphony Orchestra, J.S. Bach's Magnificat (BWV 243) and Easter Oratorio (BWV 249) in Tromsoe, W.A. Mozart's Mass in C minor with Gävle Symphony Orchestra, J.S. Bach's St Matthew Passion (BWV 244) in Bodoe, G.F. Handel's Messiah as well as J.S. Bach's St John Passion ((BWV 245)) in Nyköping, A. Vivaldi's Dixit Dominus in Stockholm, Växjö and Tingsryd, cantatas by Bach in Stockholm, W.A. Mozart's Requiem in Stockholm, J.S. Bach's Christmas Oratorio (BWV 248) in Stockholm, Hilding Rosenberg's The Holy Night in Stockholm, Henrik Arlestrand's Missa Festiva in Stockholm and Lars-Erik Larsson’s Förklädd gud (God in disguise) in Stockholm. Engagements in the 2013-2014 season have so far included G.F. Handel’s Israel in Egypt in Harstad, Rossini’s Petite Messe Solenelle in Lidingö and Benjamin Britten’s Cantata Misericordium, Charpentier’s Te Deum, W.A. Mozart’s Vesperae solennes de confessore as well as W.A. Mozart’s Requiem in Stockholm.

Forthcoming engagements include Gabriel Fauré’s Requiem and G.F. Handel’s Messiah in Stockholm, J.S. Bach’s Christmas Oratorio (BWV 248) in Stavanger, Ricimer in André Danican Philidor’s Ernelinde at the Gloger Festival and Evangelist in Sven-David Sandström’s St Matthew Passion in Philharmonie Berlin as well as in Uppsala and Stockholm.

Lars Johansson Brissman’s recordings include Nathan in Staale Kleiberg’s David and Bathsheba with the Trondheim Symphony Orchestra and the conductor Tönu Kaljuste, Duke Magnus in Ivar Hallströms Duke Magnus and the Mermaids and J.S. Bach's St John Passion (BWV 245) with REbaroque as well as Haydn’s Missa Sancti Hieronymi with Ensemble Philidor under the baton Gary Graden.
