Stephan Van Dyck (Tenor)

Born: Brussels, Belgium

The Belgian tenor and singing teacher, Stephan Van Dyck [Dijck], obtained his Diplôme Supérieur graduated in Singing from the Conservatoire Royal de Musique de Bruxelles (class of Ludovic de San); and his degree in Musicology from the Université Libre de Bruxelles. He continued his studies at the Studio Versailles Opéra with René Jacobs and Rachel Yakar, and at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique de Paris, where he won a first prize in the class of William Christie.

Since then Stephan Van Dyck has worked with many ensembles, including La Chapelle Royale (Director: Philippe Herreweghe), Organum (Director: M. Pérès), Huelgas (Director: P. Van Nevel), Janequin (Director: D. Visse), Binchois (Director: D. Vellard), and Akadêmia Ensemble (Director: Françoise Lasserre).

As soloist, Stephan Van Dyck has worked with Les Talens Lyriques (Director: Christophe Rousset), Les Arts Florissants (Director: William Christie), Ricercar Consort (Director: Philippe Pierlot), Amsterdam Baroque Orchestra (Director: Ton Koopman), La Petite Bande (Director: Sigiswald Kuijken), Les Musiciens du Louvre (Director: Marc Minkowski), Le Concert des Nations (Director: Jordi Savall), Le Parlement de Musique (Director: Martin Gester), Le Concert Spirituel (Director: Hervé Niquet), Tragicomedia (Director: Stephen Stubbs), La Fenice (Director: Jean Tubéry), Elyma (Director: Ensemble Baroque de Limoges (Director: Christophe Coin), Elyma (Director: Gabriel Garrido), Capriccio Stravagante (Director: Skip Sempé), Les plaisirs du Roy (Director: Jean-luc Impe)...

As a concert performer, Stephan Van Dyck is regularly invited to numerous international festivals and has already performed in Prague, Warsaw, St. Petersburg, Oslo, Montreal, New York, Jerusalem, Praetoria, Tokyo, La Paz and Santa Cruz. .

Stephan Van Dyck has performed in many operas, includings the title roles in Don Quichotte (by Boismortier) and la Provencale (by Duni) at the Opéra Comique in Paris, as well as the role of’Admète in Alceste (by Lully) in Nancy, Dijon... the role of Carlo in Lo frate ‘nnamorato (by Giovanni Battista Pergolesi) in Royaumont; the role of Varo in Arminio (by George Frideric Handel) in Montpellier and Nîmes; the role of’Azor in Zémire et Azor (by Grétry) in Nantes; the role of Mercure in Persée (by Lully) in Ambronay; the role of Eumete in Il Ritorno di Ulisse (by Monteverdi) in Brussels, Amsterdam; the role of Pastor in Orfeo (by Monteverdi) in Utrecht; the role of Intelletto in La Rappresentatione di Anima et di Corpo (by Cavalieri) at Théâtre de la Monnaie in Brussels; the roles of Carlos and Tacmas in Les Indes Galantes (by Rameau) in Salamanca....

Stephan Van Dyck has performed many times in recitals with pianists Boyan Vodenitcharov and Jean-Pierre Bacq in Lieder by W.A. Mozart, J. Haydn, L.v. Beethoven, Felix Mendelssohn, F. Schubert, Gabriel Fauré, Hahn ... (Brussels, Vienna, Utrecht, Namur ...). In December 2006, he participated in the creation of a contemporary work Der Steppenwolf (Op. 9) in Nantes, for tenor solo, choir and piano by the French composer Olivier Penard conducted by Paul Colléaux.

Stephan Van Dyck has made over seventy recordings of music ranging from the Middle Ages to the Classical period on various labels including Harmonia Mundi, Sony, Naxos, Fnac music, Alpha, Ricercar, Opus 111, BIS, Zig Zag, and Accent. He recorded, amongst others, the complete of Airs de Cour by Joseph Joseph Chabanceau de la Barre with the lutenist Stephen Stubbs (Ricercar), the Vespers by Claudio Monteverdi under the direction of Masaaki Suzuki in Japan (BIS), Il Canzionere in duo with Maria Cristina Kiehr conducted by Jean Tubéry (Ricercar), Joseph Haydn's Canzonettas with Jean-Pierre Bacq (Arsis), Giulio Caccini's Nuove Musiche with Christina Pluhar (Musica Ficta), Écho de Paris with Pierre Pitzl's Private Musicke) ...

Stephan Van Dyck teaches singing at the Académie de Musique de Nivelles and at the Conservatoire Royal de Musique de Bruxelles. He has given master-classes at the Toulouse and Oslo Conservatories. The Conservatories of Toulouse, Oslo, Warsaw and The Hague have already invied him for different master-classes.
