Florilegium Musicum Rotterdam (Instrumental Ensemble)

Founded: 1978 - Rotterdam, the Netherlands

The Florilegium Musicum Rotterdam (= FMR) was founded in 1978 by Martin Sonneveld. At the beginning the ensemble consisted only of strings that had specialized in making music with original instruments. Later, when the ensemble expanded its repertoire, wind players were brought in. The Florilegium Musicum is currently a complete Baroque orchestra with historical instruments, i.e. Baroque string instruments, Baroque flutes, Baroque oboes, Baroque bassoons and a harpsichord in historical construction. His repertoire includes works by J.S. Bach, Biber and Antonio Vivaldi. In Germany it often accompanies choirs during performances of oratorios. The Florilegium Musicum regularly works with the Junge Kantorei (Monteverdi's Marienvesper, George Frideric Handel's Messiah and J.S. Bach's Mass in B minor (BWV 232), Johannes-Passion (BWV 245) and Matthäus-Passion (BWV 244)) under the direction of Joachim Carlos Martini. Music Director: Willi Gundlach.
