Margareth Iping (Mezzo-soprano)

Born: Amsterdam, the Netherlands

The Dutch mezzo-soprano and music teacher, Margareth Iping, studied at the Waterlant College Amsterdam (Class of 1980). At the age of 10 she stated playing the flute in a band. Eventually she came up with that instrument at the Sweelinck Conservatorium Amsterdam (1982-1989). The she was first introduced to vocal music, and was immediately captivated by the versatility of the singing. She took singing lessons, was admitted for major sing and let the flute study for what it was. After the conservatory she studied singing further including with Felicity Palmer in London.

From 1990 to 2012 Margareth Iping has been working as a freelance singer in several professional choirs in the Netherlands, including the Choir of the Nederlandse Opera, Groot Omroepkoor (Netherlands Radio Choir) and Amsterdam Baroque Choir conducted by Ton Koopman. She had her own youth musical theater group and between 1996 and 2010 she performed an act in several shows of pianist/entertainer Hans Liberg. They did the performances both in The Netherlands and in other European countries. The act of the opera singer has been seen on Dutch television.

After the birth of her third child, Margareth Iping decided to learn another subject: she went to the Theo Thijssen Academie, PABO (2003-2006), where she obtained Bachelor of Education, specialized in teaching children between 9-12. Since August 2007, she is a teacher at the Kathedrale Koorschool (Cathedral Choir School) in Utrecht. Besides the traditional primary school subjects she also teaches music, drama and singing. Working as a class teacher and music teacher, the Kathedrale Koorschool facilitated her to do a vocational training (1011-2013). The goal of this training was to integrate drama into the choir singing activities of The Kathedrale Koorschool Utrecht.

While working in education gives Margareth Iping great satisfaction and she occasionally still appears as a soloist, the desire to sing in a good ensemble remained. The Basilus College gives her and the other singers of the choir the opportunity to explore beautiful a cappella music and perform at high level. She also sings as a soloist at the Wilhelminakerk in Bussum.
