Sanders Lau (Tenor, Conductor)

Born: Hong Kong

The Hong Kong-born tenor and conductor, Sanders Lau, holds a Master of Music degree from Eastman School of Music, where he studied conducting with William Weinert and Brad Lubman. His avid interest in music of the 17th- and 18th-centuries has also led him to study with one of the world’s most sought-after lutenists and early music scholars, Paul O'Dette. Previously, he read music at The Chinese University of Hong Kong, where he learned choral conducting from Esmond Lim and Felix Yeung. He has been selected to participate in master-classes by Helmuth Rilling, Stephen Layton, Simon Carrington, Nicolas Fink, Dénes Szabó, and more. His vocal teachers include: Katherine Ciesinski, Jimmy Chan, Margaret Yim, and Caleb Woo.,

Sanders Lau is currently Resident Conductor of Die Konzertisten, and Music Director of Singchronziers. In addition, Sanders co-founded and conducted the chamber choir Aqua Voice at The Chinese University of Hong Kong during his studies there. He was also the Assistant Conductor of the Senior Mixed Voice Choir of St Paul’s Co-educational College, which received a gold medal in the 7th World Choir Games.

Under his preparation, Die Konzertisten has performed with great critical acclaim under internationally distinguished conductors, including Stephen Layton (W.A. Mozart’s Requiem) and Jonathan Cohen (George Frideric Handel’s Messiah; Israel in Egypt). Sanders has also conducted performances ranging from standard repertoire, such as Hadyn’s Nelson Mass, and Maurice Duruflé’s Requiem, to newly commissioned works. As a soloist, Sanders performs the sacred repertoire regularly, including J.S. Bach’s cantatas; and masses by W.A. Mozart, Haydn, Schubert, and Igor Stravinsky. He also premiered Bob Chilcott’s St John Passion as Evangelist in Hong Kong.

Sanders Lau presently teaches at the Music Department of Macao Polytechnic Institute, Diocesan Boy’s School, and Hong Kong Children’s Choir.
