Andrea Meláth (Mezzo-soprano)

Born: July 13, 1968 - Budapest, Hungary

The Hungarian mezzo-soprano, Andrea Meláth, started her higher education at the Liszt Ferenc Academy of Music in Budapest, where she received a teacher`s diploma in 1995. She completed her studies with a graduation concert as singer artist in 1998. Already while studying at the Academy she participated in numerous festivals in Hungary and abroad. She won the 3rd prize of the Wigmore Hall International Song Competition in 1999 in London and was elected the “Singer of the Year in 1997 in Madeira .Different scholarships were awarded to her in 1996 - Bayreuth, in 1998 The Fisher Annie Scholarship. These opportunities helped her much to become a well known and respected singer for Hungarian concert management companies.

Since 1998, Andrea Meláth is a permanent guest artist at the Hungarian State Opera House in Budapest .She is a dedicated artist of the song culture. For her high level interpretation of contemporary music she received the Artisjus Award eight times already (between 1997 and 2009). She has performed and premiered several contemporary works from György Ligeti, through Péter Eötvös, to György Orbán, János Vajda. She passionately performs and records songs from the start of her carrier. In 2001 she was granted the Liszt Ferenc Music Award from the Ministry of Natural Cultural Heritage. In the same year she also received the “Best Young Artist Award” from the State Opera House in Budapest.

In 2001, Andrea Meláth sang first time the role of Judit in Béla Bartók´s Duke Bluebeard’s Castle in Budapest in the staging of Balázs Kovalik . After this breakthrough she has performed the same role from Glasgow (Scottish BBC Orchestra under Ivan Volkov) to Kuala Lumpur (Malaysian Symphonic Orchestra under Zoltán Pesko), from Palermo (at the Teatro di Massimo under Jan- Latham König) to London (Sadler’s Well Theatre under András Ligeti and in the Barbican Hall under Peter Ash), from Miskolc (Opera Festival directed by Michael Schulz) through Tallin (Under Gy. Selmeczi) to Antwerp , Amsterdam and Utrecht (with the Royal Flemish Philharmonic Orchestra under Daniel Callegiari). After a Bucharest tour in 2007, she was invited to the Opéra de Québec (under Robert Lepaige) in 2008. She debuted in the same role at the State Opera Stuttgart in 2009 and performed the latter in 2010 several times. In February 2010 she sang Judith at the Essen Philharmony conducted by Zoltan Pesko.

Later on Andrea Meláth débuted as Octavian in Richard Strauss´s Rosenkavalier at the Budapest State Opera , parallel to her ongoing roles as Xerxes in the opera Xerxes by George Frideric Handel, as Graf Orlofsky in the Fledermaus by J. Strauss and as Sesto in the opera La clemenza di Tito of W.A. Mozart. Late 2010 she gave concerts in Sapporo - Japan and held a masters course at the local university. In 2007 she was awarded the most highly valued Hungarian music prize: the Bartók- Pásztory Prize.

Beyond her artistic career Andrea Meláth educates as associate professor for singing at the University of Pécs on the Faculty of Music and Visual Arts since 2007.

Andrea Meláth´s sensible still dynamic voice and her expressive artistic skills earned her already well deserved success in different mezzo roles like Rosina ,Serse, Cherubino, Sesto, Octavian, Stephano, Carmen, Paulina, Donna Elvira, Santuzza, Judith, La Favorita.

Andrea Meláth is a sought - after soloist of leading orchestras with world famous conductors like Zoltán Kocsis, Iván Fischer, Tamás Vásáry, Adám Fisher, Yuri Simonov, Helmuth Rilling, Mihail Jurovsky, András Ligeti , György Ráth and Howard Williams a.o. performing oratoria, Requiem and other symphonic works.

In April 2011 Andrea Melath debuted in Francis Poulenc´s Les Dialogues des Carmelites at the State Opera in Stuttgart. In summer she sung Judit in B. Bartók´s Duke Bluebeard’s Castle at Savonlinna Summer Festival in Finland , early autumn at the Opera of Nice and in December the same role in Tokio with the NHK Phiharmonic Orchestra conducted by Charles Dutoit. In February 2012 she performed the role of the child in Maurice Ravel´s The Child and the Spells with the Hungarian National Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Zoltán Kocsis in Budapest.

Andrea Meláth has several song CD releases under the valued Hungaroton brand, and also some others with the Hungarian State Radio. Her full opera recordings enumerate with Naxos - in the role of Judith in B. Bartók´s Duke Bluebeard’s Castle, with Hungaroton- Sesto in Baldassare Galluppi’s Clemenza di Tito, with Vox Artis - in the role of Donna Elvira in Don Giovanni.
