Edmund Milly (Bass-Baritone)

Born: June 1987 - Pennington, New Jersey, USA

The American bass-baritone, Edmund J. Milly, began his musical education with cello lessons at age 3. While at the American Boychoir School in Princeton, New Jersey from 1997 to 2001, he amassed formative musical experiences under the batons of Seiji Ozawa, Kurt Masur, James Levine, and André Previn, and gained early exposure to pieces which remain in his repertoire to this day. He received his Bachelor of Music with Distinction from McGill University in Montreal. He also holds a Bachelor of Art and Master of Arts degree from McGill in English Literature (Septembere 2011-August 2013), contributing to his uncommonly keen interpretive capabilities. These eclectic experiences led him to the Yale Institute of Sacred Music in New Haven, Connecticut, where he received an Master of Music degree as a member of the elite Yale Voxtet and a student of James Taylor (September 2013-May 2015). Yale Schola Cantorum provided the perfect proving ground to hone his craft under the direction of David Hill, Simon Carrington, and Masaaki Suzuki.

In his Lincoln Center debut under Masaaki Suzuki, Edmund Milly portrayed an "authoritative and confident" Jesus in J.S. Bach's St. John Passion (BWV 245) (Seen and Heard International). Since then, he has sung the role of Jesus with Trinity Wall Street, the Oregon Bach Festival, and several other organizations.

Edmund Milly brings “perfect diction” (Los Angeles Times) and “mellifluous” tone (San Francisco Chronicle) to every performance. He was a chorister at St. Thomas's Episcopal Church in New Haven, Connecticut (September 2013-May 2015). Based in New York, he sings with the Grammy-nominated Trinity Wall Street Choir (Director: Julian Wachner) (since May 2015), and is a founding member of Trident Ensemble (since September 2014). Equally at home as a soloist or in ensembles of the highest caliber, he has recently performed with the Mark Morris Dance Group, the Clarion Choir, Cantata Profana, Antico Moderno, New York Baroque Incorporated, and Grand Harmonie, and has contributed solos to various international radio broadcasts on BBC and CBC. An alumnus of the American Boychoir School, McGill University, and the Yale Institute of Sacred Music, Edmund interprets music both ancient and modern with an expressivity founded in scholarly rigor.

Edmund Milly has demonstrated 16th-century contrapuntal improvisation techniques in Venice with Viva Voce, and performed Russian liturgical music to wildly enthusiastic Russian audiences in a Clarion Choir tour sponsored by the U.S. Department of State. From Arrigoni to Jan Dismas Zelenka, he has relished an unusual number of opportunities to perform obscure early music gems, yet he also remains an intrepid explorer of vocal repertoire outside of his "Western art music" comfort zone; on tours with Northern Harmony, he has brought stylistically authentic early American hymnody and vocal folk polyphony from Bulgaria, Georgia, Corsica, and South Africa to audiences all over Europe. In a strange twist of fate, he has even sung 140 of Elvis Presley's greatest hits - in alphabetical order - with Quebecois pop phenom Gregory Charles for a crowd of thousands at the Festival Mondial Choral de Laval. He currently lives in Newark, New Jersey.
