Barbara Scherler (Contralto, Mezzo-soprano)

Born: January 10, 1938 - Leipzig, Germany

The German contralto, Barbara Scherler, studied at the Musikhochschule Berlin and with Margarete Bärwinkel.

In 1959 Barbara Scherler made her debut at the State Theatre of Hannover, as Cherubino in Le Nozze di Figaro. She was a member of this opera house until 1964. In 1961 and 1962 she participated in ‘Concert for young Artists’. Then she began a career of concert and oratorio soloist. From 1964 to 1968 she was a member of the ensemble of Cologne Opera. In 1968 she moved to Deutsche Opernhaus Berlin. She made guest appearances in renowned concert halls in Germany and abroad. She made a name for herself as a great Bach interpreter, but excelled also as a Lieder singer. She appeared on the major stages of West Germany, at the State Opera of Vienna, at the Théâtre de la Monnaie of Brussels, at the Covent Garden Opera in London, in Lisbon, Mexico City, Zürich and Venice. She participated in the festivals of Drottningholm, Edinburgh, Wiesbaden and Athens. She sang in June 1976 at Deutschen Oper Berlin in the premiere of Toshiro Mayuzumi’s opera Der Tempelbrand, in September 1979 at the same house in Der Untergang der Titanic by Wilhelm Dieter Siebert, and in September 1984 in the premiere of A. Reimann’s Gespenstersonate.
