Dirk Schmidt (Bass)

Born: Magdeburg, Saxony-Anhalt, Germany

The German bass, Dirk Schmidt, studied vocal performance and choral conducting at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater Leipzig. He gave his graduate recital and received his postgraduate degree in 1995-1996. He was the first-prize winner of the Deutsche Schubertgesellschaft and was awarded a scholarship by the Free State of Saxony.

Dirk Schmidt's extensive concert repertoire includes Monteverdi's Vespro della Beata Vergine, modern premieres and nearly every important bass and baritone part of the Baroque, Classical, and Romantic period as well as of the twentieth century. He has performed in concert in many European countries and the USA. He has worked with ensembles such as the Thomanerchor Leipzig, Gewandhausorchester Leipzig, MDR Sinfonieorchester, NDR Sinfonieorchester, Radio-Symphonie-Orchester-Berlin and others under Herbert Blomstedt, Peter Schreier, Helmuth Rilling, and Lothar Zagrosek.

Dirk Schmidt is a member of the Collegium Vocale Leipzig (Director: Michael Schönheit), and works as vocal instructor with the Thomanerchor Leipzig in in Leipzig (since 2015).

His artistic work is documented through numerous radio broadcasts and CD recordings. He currently lives in Leipzig, Saxony, Germany.
