Stephen Smith (Conductor, Organ, Harpsichord)

Born: 1955 - Baltimore, Maryland, USA

The founder and artistic director, Stephen Smith, is a dual citizen of Switzerland and the USA. Born in 1955, he began his musical studies at the age of seven at the Peabody Conservatory in Baltimore, Maryland.

Having earned multiple music degrees in the USA and Switzerland, Stephen Smith has intensively studied the sacred repertoire of the renaissance and baroque eras with particular interest in historical performance practice as well as the interconnections to contemporary music, to which more than 130 concerts with the Ensemble Corund testify. Since 1982 he has lived permanently in Switzerland. He is a sought-after conductor, organist, harpsichordist and pedagogue.

Besides the Ensemble Corund and Corund Baroque Orchestra, Stephen Smith is the artistic director and conductor of the Studiochor Lucerne and directs the Kantorei at the historic St. Matthew's Church in Lucerne. Numerous CD and radio recordings reflect his wide musical interests and activity.

Stephen Smith lives with his wife Rita and their two children Samuel and Sarah near Lucerne.
