Philip Spray (Violone, Baroque Guitar)

Born: March 22, ____ - Indiana, USA

The American violone and Baroque guitar player, Philip Spray, studied at Southport High School in Indiana (Class of 1972) and at Indiana University in Bloomington (Class of 1976)

Philip Spray has appeared with numerous period instrument ensembles across the country in concert and on recordings. Co-founder of the Indianapolis Baroque Orchestra under Barthold Kuijken, he also is founding director of Alchymy Viol Consort and Musik Ekklesia, a period instrument ensemble dedicated to performances of sacred Baroque music.

Musik Ekklesia’s first recording, "The Vanishing Nordic Choral", was released in 2011 by Sono Luminus. The English magazine Gramophone selectedit as an “Editors’ Pick”, describing the recording as enchanting and intriguing. American Record Guide‘s review called the CD absolutely delightful. The album was a 2012 Grammy nominee for best classical producer. Philip Spray recorded Monteverdi’s 1610 Vespers with Miami's Seraphic Fire and has toured across this country and internationally with that ensemble. He has collaborated as performer, arranger and producer with Concordia Publishing on several recording/publishing projects including their popular set Heirs of the Reformation.
