Adrian Thompson (Tenor)

The English tenor, Adrian Thompson, was trained at The Guildhall School of Music and Drama where he now is a professor of vocal studies..

Adrian Thompson is an artist of extraordinary versatility with a wide-ranging opera, concert and recital repertoire of works from the renaissance to the present day. His opera appearances have included the title role of Peter Grimes, Skuratov From The House Of The Dead and Canio Il Pagliacci for Oper Frankfurt; Florestan Fidelio for Welsh National Opera, Albert Gregor The Makropoulos Case for Opera Zuid and Opera de Stadt Köln, the title role of Janacek's The Diary of One who Disappeared both in Brussels and the Aix-en-Provence Festival, Zivny in Janacek's Osud and Midas in Die Liebe Der Danae for Garsington Opera as well as concert performances as Grigory Boris Godunov at The Brighton Festival and Bacchus Ariadne Auf Naxos at The Barbican. He has also performed with Glyndebourne, The Royal Opera, English National Opera, Scottish Opera, Badisches Staatstheater, Karlsruhe, Staatstheater Stuttgart, Staatstheater Darmstadt, Théâtre des Champs Elysées, New Israeli Opera, Netherlands Opera and at many festivals including Buxton, Wexford, Lausanne and Göttingen.

Adrian Thompson has performed with all the major British Orchestras and ensembles and his overseas engagements have taken him all over the world. During his career he has worked with many of the distinguished early music conductors - Sir John Eliot Gardiner, Trevor Pinnock, Richard Hickox, Harry Christophers and Philippe Herreweghe. No stranger to contemporary repertoire, he has performed Lutoslawski's Paroles Tisées with Oliver Knussen and the London Sinfonietta, recorded Judith Wier's A Night at the Chinese Opera and given many first performances of works by British and European composers. Recent concert highlights include Janacek's Glagolitic Mass with Richard Hickox, Benjamin Britten's Nocturne with The BBC Symphony Orchestra under Sir Andrew Davis in Frankfurt, B. Britten's Serenade for Tenor Horn and Strings with The City of London Sinfonia and Richard Hickox and also with Jan Lathan Koening and the Orchestre National Belgique; L.v. Beethoven 9th Symphony with the Hallé Orchestra, Gustav Mahler's Das Lied von de Erde with the London Mozart Players and Paragon Ensemble and, recently, staged performances of Haydn's The Creation with The Scottish Chamber Orchestra/Nicholas Kraemer. He is particularly noted for his performances of the Verdi Requiem, Edward Elgar's Dream Of Gerontius and the Evangelists of J.S. Bach's St John (BWV 245) and St Matthew Passions (BWV 244).

A very experienced recitalist, Adrian Thompson has made many appearances at the Wigmore Hall and at festivals in the UK and Europe with pianists Graham Johnson, Iain Burnside and Roger Vignoles and harpist Ossian Ellis. He has recorded discs of works by Ralph Vaughan Williams and Gurney, a volume in the acclaimed Complete Schubert Edition for Hyperion, Warlock’s The Curlew for Collins Classics and Schubert's Die Schöne Müllerin for Pickwick. He appears on B. Britten’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream for Virgin Classics, R. Vaughan WilliamsThe Pilgrim’s Progress, Sir John in Love for Chandos and in George Frideric Handel’s Rodelinda for Virgin Classics. His discography also includes B. Britten’s Serenade, Les Illuminations and Nocturne, Felix Mendelssohn’s Lobegesang for Naxos and Ferruccio Busoni's Rondo Arlechinesco with the BBC SO/Knussen for Deutsche Grammophon.

Adrian Thompson 's recent future engagements include Monostatos Die Zauberflöte with Sir Colin Davis at The Royal Opera House, Prologue The Turn of the Screw for Grand Théâtre de Genève, concert performances of Peter Grimes in Gothenburg, Laca Jenufa for Opera Zuid and Chairman Mao in John Adams' Nixon in China for ENO. On the concert platform he will give a recital at The Concertgebouw with Roger Braun and performances of E. Elgar Dream of Gerontius with The Bach Choir/David Hill and the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra/Christopher Seaman and the Verdi Requiem at the Worcester Three Choirs Festival.
