Ailish Tynan (Soprano)

Born: May 30, 1975 - Mullingar, Ireland,

The Irish soprano, Ailish Tynan, trained at Trinity College, the Royal Irish Academy of Music in Dublin and the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London. She was a Vilar Young Artist at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden and a BBC New Generation Artist. In 2003, representing Ireland, she won the Rosenblatt Recital Prize at BBC Cardiff Singer of the World.

Recent highlights include Gustav Mahler's Symphony No. 4 with the Prague Symphony Orchestra & BBC National Orchestra of Wales under Jac van Steen and G. Mahler's Symphony No. 2 with the Orchestra dell'Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia under Myung-Whun Chung; Bella in Tippett's The Midsummer Marriage at the BBC Proms with the BBC Symphony Orchestra under Sir Andrew Davis and a series of recitals series at the Vinterfestspill, Norway with pianist Matti Hirvonen.

Operatic engagements include Gretel in Engelbert Humperdinck's Hänsel und Gretel and Madame Cortese in Il viaggio a Reims for the Royal Opera House Covent Garden; Gretel in Hansel and Gretel for Scottish Opera; Tigrane in Radamisto for English National Opera; Papagena in W.A. Mozart's Die Zauberflöte at La Scala; Despina in W.A. Mozart's Così fan tutte at the Théâtre du Capitole de Toulouse; Héro in Béatrice et Bénédict for Houston Grand Opera, Opéra Comique and the Grand Théâtre de la Ville de Luxembourg. Other operatic highlights include Sophie in Der Rosenkavalier, Nannetta in Falstaff and Atalanta in Xerxes for the Royal Swedish Opera; Marzelline in L.v. Beethoven's Fidelio at Covent Garden under Antonio Pappano; Miss Wordsworth in Albert Herring for Opéra Comique and Opéra de Rouen; and Vixen in The Cunning Little Vixen for Grange Park Opera.

A prolific concert and recording artist, Ailish Tynan works frequently with British and international orchestras. Last season she sang G. Mahler's Symphony No. 8 with the Frankfurt Radio Symphony Orchestra under Paavo Järvi; G. Mahler's Symphony No.4 with the Hallé Orchestra under Sir Mark Elder and at the BBC Proms, Bella in Tippett’s A Midsummer Marriage with the BBC Symphony Orchestra under Sir Andrew Davis. Other highlights include G. Mahler's Symphony No. 8 with the Philharmonia Orchestra under Lorin Maazel and Orchestra dell'Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia under Sir Antonio Pappano; Gliere’s Concerto for Coloratura Soprano with Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra under Kirill Karabits at the BBC Proms; Verdi Requiem at the Ludwigsburger Schlossfestspiele under Michael Hofstetter; Haydn's The Creation with the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra under Andris Nelsons and Ralph Vaughan Williams' Hodie at the Royal Concertgebouw in Amsterdam.

In recital Ailish Tynan works regularly with pianist including Iain Burnside, Malcolm Martineau, Graham Johnson, Julius Drake, Roger Vignoles, Chris Glynn and James Baillieu, giving recitals extensively including the Wigmore Hall, Edinburgh, City of London, Cheltenham and West Cork Music Festivals.

Her discography includes a recording of Hubert Parry Songs for Delphian and An Irish Songbook for Signum Classics both with pianist Iain Burnside, Michael Head Songs for Hyperion, Gluck arias with the Classical Opera Company for Wigmore Hall Live, Messiah with the Academy of Ancient Music and the King’s College Choir, Cambridge for EMI, G. Mahler's Symphony No. 8 with the London Symphony Orchestra under Valery Gergiev, Herbert Hughes songs for Signum and Muriel Herbert songs for Linn Records. For Hyperion she recorded Francis Poulenc songs with Graham Johnson.

In the current season Ailish Tynan performs George Frideric Handel’s Messiah with the Academy of Ancient Music on tour in Spain and Belgium, makes her company debut at Garsington Opera as Anna in Intermezzo and makes her long awaited return to Welsh National Opera as Gretel. Further ahead Ailish returns to the Royal Opera House Covent Garden for Dmitri Shostakovich’s opera The Nose.
