The English tenor, Toby Charles Ward, was a chorister of Leeds Parish Church. He studied at Fulneck School (2005-2011). He studied at University of Cambridge: King's College (2013-2016), where he read for a music degree and sang with King's College Choir Cambridge. His time with King's College Choir Cambridge saw him perform solos on the BBC2 programme Carols from King's, Radio 4 on Christmas Eve and the Royal Albert Hall, with a particular highlight being Felix Mendelssohn's Ave Maria in the Royal Concertgebouw, Amsterdam. He was a soloist on four CD's for King's College Choir Cambridge and two CD's with the close-harmony group The King's Men, with whom he memorably toured Iceland and England multiple times. He currently studies with Andrew Kennedy.
Toby Ward is a freelance Tenor and Musician in Residence at Uppingham School. On the Opera stage, he has sung the roles of Jupiter in George Frideric Handel's Semele, Basilio in W.A. Mozart's The Marriage of Figaro, and chorus in W.A. Mozart's The Magic Flute, Benjamin Britten's Curlew River, Tavener's Mary of Egypt, and Tchaikovsky's Eugene Onegin, all with Cambridge University Opera Society (CUOS). In addition to his current teaching role, he enjoys singing with the choirs of St George's, Windsor, York Minster, St Mary's Bourne Street, Edington Music Festival, The Queen's Six, Carice Singers, Trinity Consort and Peregrine Consort.
Toby Ward co-directs Ensemble Pro Victoria, a Cambridge-based early music consort. Highlights include Monteverdi's 1610 Vespers (Adam Hickox) in King's College Chapel and a Michaelmas 2016 Bach series, including J.S. Bach's Weihnachts-Oratorium (BWV 248) (Richard Gowers) in King's Chapel. Upcoming early music include two May concerts of pre-reformation polyphony in Cambridge and premiering a reconstruction of Tallis' Gaude Gloriosa with Alamire (Dr David Skinner) in St Johnís Smith Square.
An aspiring songster, Toby Ward was a Pembroke Lieder Scheme scholar 2015-2016 learning song with the pianist Joseph Middleton and various visiting professional singers. During this period, he participated in master-classes with Roderick Williams, Lawrence Zazzo and Amanda Roocroft, amongst others.
Upcoming concerts include a tour of England with The Façade Ensemble performing Arvo Pärt's Passio, a tour of Sweden with the Swedish pianist Martin Arpåker performing Warlock and Ralph Vaughan Williams song, G.F. Handel's Israel in Egypt with Oundle and Uppingham Choral Societies and G.F. Handel's Messiah with Richmond Choral Society. He currently lives in Uppingham, England.
