Martin Traugott Wilhelm Blumner (Composer)

Born: November 21, 1827 - Fürstenberg (Mecklenburg), Germany
Died: November 16, 1901 - Berlin, Germany

Martin Traugott Wilhelm Blumner was a German conductor and composer. Son of physician, he studied during his high school time in Neustrelitz piano, organ and music theory and received there concert-master Göpfert. Since 1845 he studied theology and philosophy, later mathematics and natural sciences in Berlin, and at the same time was a member of the Berliner Singakademie. In 1847 he received Bachelor of Music as a pupil of Siegfried Dehn.

In 1853 Martin Blumner became vice-director of the Berliner Singakademie, and from 1876 to 1900 was their director. For many years he was also conductor of the "Liedertafel" donated by Carl Friedrich Zelter in 1809. In 1875 he became member of the Kgl. Akademie der Künste, in 1880 their senate member, in 1885 chairmen of their musical section and in 1891 vice-president and director of a master-class for composition. The University of Berlin appointed him as director of music and professor. On the occasion of the hundred-anniversary of the Singakademie in 1891, he received doctor of honour for philosophy.
