Samuel Gmelin was a German musician and schoolmaster. He was born the son of a linen weaver in Plauen. He attended Gymnasiums (high schools) in Schleiz and Gera (or/and Greiz and Halle (Saale)); He matriculated at Jena University on September 3, 1715, and studied with J.S. Bach in Weimar between then and 1717. In 1719 he was appointed Kantor at Elsterberg, about 15 km. (10 miles) north of Plauen, and in 1726 applied unsuccessfully for a similar post at the Johanniskirche in Plauen itself. Other applications for posts in Schleiz and Gera also came to nothing, and he remained in Elsterberg, where he was made Rector (schoolmaster) in 1730.
Samuel Gmelin mentioned the lessons with J.S. Bach on the occasion of his unsuccessful application for the Kantor post in Plauen in 1726.
