Johann Christian Köpping (Copyist, Curator, ach's Pupil)

Born: c1704 - Großbothen, about 30 km south-east of Leipzig, Saxony, Germany
Died: 1772

Johann Christian Köpping was a German curator. He was born the son of Martin Köpping (schoolmaster in Großbothen). He enrolled at the Thomasschule in Leipzig on June 16, 1718; studied there from 1718 to 1726; and at Universität Leipzig from 1725. He also studied privately with J.S. Bach in Leipzig between 1723 and 1726, and served as curator at the Thomasschule. Like several of J.S. Bach's other pupils, he acted also as copyist for J.S. Bach from 1723-1724 and occasionaly until the end of 1726. He was identified in J.S. Bach' manuscripts as Anon. Id; Anon. 19; J. S. Bach XXIV. It is to Köpping that we owe the only known score of J.S. Bach's Cantata O heilges Geist und Wasserbad, BWV 165 (1724). After his studies, he worked as sexton at the Thomaskirche in Leipzig from 1740. His brothers were also Thomaners: Gottlieb Köpping (1701-1763) in 1715-1724; Johann Andreas Köpping (1714-1797) in 1733-1736.
