Painting done over my Easter break in France, whilst listening to the Saint Matthew's Passion by Bach. I know the historical facts of Joan of Arc's life rather well and read the actual transcript of her court case, in preparation for a film on her life I was interviewed for. In the painting I wanted to show her experience of being surrounded by fire, her dress and hands burning, whilst still communing with her saints and keeping her faith.
