Bach in Arts - Bach Portrait

B-54

Type:

Bach Painting

Title:

J.S. Bach, silhouette on glass

Description:

Unpublished, in the possession of the Revd. Karl Heckel, Zürich and Augsburg; acquired in 1970 from the family of the Revd. Peter Göpfert of Pullach near Munich.
The silhouette is of the same size as the Kanth/Donebauer silhouette (B-52). Signature on lower right edge “Reinhold Hanisch fecit”. The glass plate was originally secured to its pasteboard backing with black- patterned adhesive tape, but is now in a more modern frame. Inscription on pasteboard “Brought from Vienna, August 1921”, with illegible signature. Date added more recently, presumably by an antiquarian, “c. 1760-80”; certainly executed before the turn of the century. Similarity to the glass painting B-53, also in the signature, but slight discrepancies in wig and jabot. Nevertheless the same model may have been used, especially if it was done by genuine églomisé technique, Authenticity problems as for B-53.

Measures:

Silver-backed as a mirror, glass plate 16.5 x 12.2 cm.
Actual picture (Indian ink drawing) 11.9 x 8 cm.
