Type:

Bach Painting

Title:

Filling the world with Bach

Description:

Jane Williams is an artist working in Warwickshire. Much of her artwork is themed around music and she takes her sketchbook to every concert she attends. She has been fascinated by musicians, and particularly string players, for some time.
Jane created a series of paintings and sketches inspired by Raphael Wallfisch playing the Complete Bach Cello Suites at St. Mary’s Church, Warwick in March 2003.
"This group of work stems from a wonderful evening earlier this year when Raphael Wallfisch played all the Bach cello suites in St Mary’s Church - and a lunch time concert in the Pump Rooms. It is only ever possible to snatch a few brief sketches in a performance. I come away with a germ of an idea for a painting which develops over time relying on memory of the occasion, a few drawings and of course the music. The studies and the final painting "Filling the world with Bach" are my attempts to achieve what it felt like to listen to Bach in St Mary’s that evening. The music connecting audience and performer, filled the huge space creating a deep sense of unity."
She says of her art: "It is the performance that inspires my paintings. My aim is to attempt to recreate the whole experience of being at a concert; they are never intended to be portraits of the musicians."

About the artist:
Currently Artist in Residence with Leamington Music. Exhibition of related work 4-8 May in the Annexe of the Royal Pump Rooms, Leamington Spa.
Musicians performing, how they communicate with each other and their audience through the music as been a long standing fascination, since a weekend of Haydn String Quartets at the Barbican in 1988.
My paintings attempt to reflect the experience of listening to a piece of music, evoking the mood through use of colour and marks. Recently the audience is included as it clearly plays an important part for the musicians.
