Quodlibet is a composition based on a collage of pre-existing and usuall familiar melodies. One of Bach’s earliest vocal works is the secular Wedding-Quodlibet, BWV 524. This is both a most unusual composition with a mixture of earthy texts of narrative and commentary, as well as a study of his compositional interests and his involvement in the Bach Family tradition. The Quodlibet survives in a score in Bach’s hand datable to 1707-1708. Scored for SATB and continuo and lasting about 11 minutes, this Quodlibet is potpourri of music and text discovered less than a hundred years ago, first explored in the early 1950's when modern Bach scholarship began, then studied and recorded. The annual gatherings of the wider Bach family in Erfurt, Arnstadt or Eisenach have long been the subject of interest and Bach’s Quodlibet embodies these annual celebrations.
