Text for Cantata 10
Meine Seel erhebt den Herren

Original German Text

English Translation

1. CHOR

Meine Seel erhebt den Herren,
und mein Geist freuet sich Gottes, meines Heilandes;

My soul magnifies the Lord,
and my spirit rejoices in God, my Savior;
for he has looked upon his lowly handmaid.
Behold, henceforth all generations
shall praise me blessed.

2. ARIA (Sopran)

Herr, der du stark und mächtig bist,
Gott, dessen Name heilig ist,
wie wunderbar sind deine Werke!
Du siehest mich Elenden an,
du hast an mir so viel getan,
daß ich nicht alles zähl und merke.

Lord, you who are strong and mighty,
God, whose name is holy,
how wonderful are your works!
You look upon me, a lowly one,
you have done so much for me,
that I can neither tally nor note it all.

3. REZITATIV (Tenor)

im Glauben und im Lieben sein;
die nacket, bloß und blind,
die voller Stolz und Hoffart sind,
will seine Hand wie Spreu zerstreun.

The Most High’s goodness and loyalty
are renewed every morning
and endure forever and ever
for those who always look to his aid
and trust in him with true fear.
Whereas, he also wields strength
with his arm over them,
who are neither cold nor warm
in faith or in love;
they callow, simple and blind,
they full of pride and haughtiness,
will be strewn like chaff from his hand.

4. ARIA (Baß)

Gewaltige stößt Gott vom Stuhl
hinunter in den Schwefelpfuhl;
die Niedern pflegt Gott zu erhöhen,
daß sie wie Stern am Himmel stehen.
Die Reichen läßt Gott bloß und leer,
die Hungrigen füllt er mit Gaben,
daß sie auf seinem Gnadenmeer
stets Reichtum und die Fülle haben.

God topples the mighty from their thrones
downward into the sulfuric slough;
God cares for the oppressed, elevating them,
that they rise like stars in the heavens.
God leaves the rich bare and empty,
he fills the hungry with gifts,
that they upon his sea of grace,
continually have richness and abundance.

5. DUETT (Alt, Tenor)

Er denket der Barmherzigkeit
und hilft seinem Diener Israel auf.

He remembers with mercy
and helps up his servant Israel.

6. REZITATIV (Tenor)

Was Gott den Vätern alter Zeiten
Was Gott dem Abraham,
aus lauter Liebe zu erlösen;
drum bleibts darbei,

What God described and promised
our forebears in ancient times
he also fulfills in works and in deeds.
What God promised and swore to Abraham
as he appeared to him in his tents,
has occurred,
for it was the time of fulfillment.
His seed would be spread
so vastly as sand is at the sea
and stars in the firmament,
the Savior would be born,
the eternal word became apparent in flesh,
to redeem humankind
from death and evil
and from Satan’s slavery,
out of pure love;
thus it only follows,
that God’s word be full of grace and truth.

7 . CHORAL

Lob und Preis sei Gott dem Vater
und dem Sohn und dem heiligen Geiste,
wie es war im Anfang,
jetzt und immerdar
und von Ewigkeit zu Ewigkeit.
Amen.

Laud and praise be to God the Father
and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit,
as it was in the beginning,
now and evermore
and from eternity to eternity.
Amen.
