Text for Cantata 120b
Gott, man lobet dich in der Stille zu Zion, II (score lost)

Original German Text

English Translation

1. ARIOSO

Gott, man lobet dich in der Stille zu Zion,
und dir bezahlet man Gelübde.

God, one praises you in the stillness of Zion,
and one renders a solemn vow to you.

2. ARIA

Zahle, Zion, die Gelübde,
zahle sie dem Höchsten aus.
Deine Hoffnung trifft dir ein,
Brunn und Quellen sind noch rein,
seine Treue
baut und gründet auf das neue
seines Nahmens Ehr und Haus.

Render, Zion, your solemn vows,
render them to the Most High.
Your hopes converge with you,
fountain and spring remain pure,
his devotion
is built and grounded upon that renewed
by his name’s honor and house.

3. REZITATIV

Ach! du geliebte Gottesstadt,
Gott stehe dir noch ferner bei,
dein Feuer, Herd und dein Altar
schwebt in Verfolgung und Gefahr,
drum nimm doch deiner selbsten wahr.
Bekenne fest, und wanke nicht
wie ein zerbrochenes Rohr, wie ein verlöschend Licht.
Bleib in Bekenntnis deiner Hoffnung
Gott ist getreu
der sie verheissen hat.

Oh! you beloved city of God
God stands beside you further,
your fire, hearth and your altar
waft under persecution and danger,
therefore do remain true to yourself.
Firmly profess, and do not falter
like a broken reed, like an extinguished lamp.
Remain by the creed of your hope.
God is faithful
as has been promised.

4. ARIA

Treu im Gläuben
unbeweglich in der Not
treu im Leben, treu im Tod
müssen wahre Christen bleiben,
daß sie nach dem frohen Sterben
jenes Lebens Krone erben.

Faithful in belief
unmoved by distress
faithful in life, faithful in death,
true Christians must abide,
that after glad death they
will inherit that crown of life.

5. REZITATIV

Wohlan! du heilige Gemeinde,
so tue nach dem Wort
und reize fort und fort
zur Liebe, zu den guten Werken,
daß alle deine Feinde
den wahren Bund,
und deiner Lehre festen Grund
zur Folge der Gemeinschaft merken.

Well then! you sacred congregation,
so act according to the word
and aspire, furthermore,
toward love; toward good works,
that all your foes
realize the true bond
and the solid foundation of your teachings
as the outcome of this fellowship.

6. CHORAL

Du heilige Brunst, süßer Trost,
nun hilf und fröhlich und getrost
in deinen Dienst beständig bleiben,
die Trübsal uns nicht abtreiben;
o Herr, durch dein Kraft uns bereit,
und stärk des Fleisches Blödigkeit,
daß wir hier ritterlich ringen,
durch Tod und Leben zu dir dringen,
Alleluja, Alleluja.

You holy ardor, comfort sweet,
help us now joyfully and confidently
to remain constant in your service,
tribulation not impeding us;
O Lord, prepare us through your might
and bolster the weakness of the flesh
that we here might gallantly wrestle
through death and life, urgently unto you.
Hallelujah, Hallelujah.
