Text for Cantata 185
Barmherziges Herze der ewigen Liebe

Original German Text

English Translation

1. ARIA (Sopran, Tenor)

Barmherziges Herze der ewigen Liebe,
errege, bewege mein Herze durch dich;
damit ich Erbarmen und Gütigkeit übe,
o Flamme der Liebe, zerschmelze du mich!

Compassionate heart of eternal love,
arouse, stir my heart through you;
so that I practice mercy and goodness,
O flame of love, do forge me!

2. REZITATIV (Alt)

Ihr Herzen, die ihr euch
in Stein und Fels verkehret,
zerfließt und werdet weich,
erwägt, was euch der Heiland lehret,
übt, übt Barmherzigkeit
und sucht noch auf der Erden
dem Vater gleich zu werden!
Ach! greifet nicht durch das verbotne Richten
dem Allerhöchsten ins Gericht,
sonst wird sein Eifer euch zernichten.
Vergebt, so wird euch auch vergeben;
gebt, gebt in diesem Leben;
macht euch ein Kapital,
das dort einmal
Gott wiederzahlt mit reichen Interessen;
denn wie ihr meßt, wird man euch wieder messen.

You hearts, which have contorted yourselves
into stone and rock,
melt and become pliable,
consider what the Savior teaches you,
practice, practice compassion
and seek while still upon earth
to become like the Father!
Oh! do not summon the Most High to trial
by casting illicit judgment,
for his zeal will destroy you.
Forgive, so you too will be forgiven;
invest, invest in this life;
raise yourselves capital,
so that once there
God will remunerate with high interest;
for how you measure, others will later measure you.

3. ARIA (Alt)

Sei bemüht in dieser Zeit,
Seele, reichlich auszustreuen,
soll die Ernte dich erfreuen
in der reichen Ewigkeit,
wo, wer Gutes ausgesäet,
fröhlich nach den Garben gehet.

Endeavor in this time,
soul, to generously scatter [seed]
the harvest shall gladden you
in abounding eternity,
where, whosoever sows goodness
merrily walks behind the sheaves.

4. REZITATIV (Baß)

Die Eigenliebe schmeichelt sich!
Bestrebe dich, erst deinen Balken auszuziehen,

Egotism flatters itself!
Endeavor, first to remove your own beam,
then you may also worry about the splinter
in the eye of your neighbor.
If suddenly your neighbor is not altogether pure
just know, that you too are no angel,
correct your own failings!
How indeed can one blind person
help another one walk straight and true?
How will they not fall, to their harm,
into the open grave, both of them?

5. ARIA (Baß)

Das ist der Christen Kunst:
nur Gott und sich erkennen,
von wahrer Liebe brennen,
nicht unzulässig richten,
noch fremdes Tun vernichten,
des Nächsten nicht vergessen,
mit reichem Maße messen:
das macht bei Gott und Menschen Gunst,
das ist der Christen Kunst.

This is the art of being Christian:
recognizing only God and oneself
burning with true love,
not judging unduly,
nor quashing others deeds,
not forgetting one‘s neighbor,
gauging with generous measure:
this causes grace by God and people,
this is the art of being Christian.

6. CHORAL

Ich ruf zu dir, Herr Jesu Christ,
ich bitt, erhör mein Klagen,
verleih mir Gnad zu dieser Frist,
laß mich doch nicht verzagen;
den rechten Weg, o Herr, ich mein,
den wollest du mir geben,
dir zu leben,
meinm Nächsten nütz zu sein,
dein Wort zu halten eben.

I cry to you, Lord Jesus Christ,
I plea, answer my lament,
bestow grace upon me at the proper time,
let me indeed not despair;
the proper path, O Lord, is my intent,
would that you grant me,
to live for you,
being a benefit to my neighbor,
keeping straight your word.
