|
Ärgre dich, o Seele, nicht,
daß das allerhöchste Licht,
Gottes Glanz und Ebenbild,
sich in Knechtsgestalt verhüllt,
ärgre dich, o Seele, nicht! |
Be not concerned, O soul,
that the supreme light,
Gods brilliance and likeness
is disguised in the form of a servant,
be not concerned, O soul! |

2. REZITATIV (Baß) |
|
Die Knechtsgestalt, die Not, der Mangel
trifft Christi Glieder nicht allein,
es will ihr Haupt selbst arm und elend sein.
Und ist nicht Reichtum, ist nicht Überfluß
des Satans Angel, so man mit Sorgfalt meiden muß?
Wird dir im Gegenteil
die Last zu viel zu tragen,
wenn Armut dich beschwert,
wenn Hunger dich verzehrt,
und willst sogleich verzagen,
so denkst du nicht an Jesum, an dein Heil.
Hast du wie jenes Volk nicht bald zu essen,
so seufzest du:
Ach Herr, wie lange willst du mein vergessen? |
The form of a servant, the need, the lacking
do not merely apply to Christ’s limbs,
even his head will be impoverished and wretched.
And is not fortune, is not abundance
Satan’s blade, that one must rigorously evade?
Will for you, conversely,
the load be too much to bear,
when poverty encumbers you,
when hunger consumes you,
and will you immediately despair,
do you not think of Jesus, of your salvation?
Are you, like other people, not soon to eat,
so you sigh:
Oh Lord, how long will you forget me? |

|
Bist du, der mir helfen soll,
eilst du nicht, mir beizustehen?
Mein Gemüt ist zweifelsvoll,
du verwirfst vielleicht mein Flehen;
doch, o Seele, zweifle nicht,
laß Vernunft dich nicht bestricken;
deinen Helfer, Jakobs Licht,
kannst du in der Schrift erblicken. |
Are you he who shall help me,
do you not hasten to my assistance?
My mind is full of doubt,
you perhaps will reject my supplication;
yet, O soul, do not doubt,
let reason not entangle you;
your helper, the light of Jacob
is revealed in the scriptures. |

|
Ach, daß ein Christ so sehr vor seinen Körper sorgt!
Was ist er mehr?
Ein Bau von Erden,
der wieder muß zur Erde werden,
ein Kleid, so nur geborgt.
Er könnte ja das beste Teil erwählen,
so seine Hoffnung nie betrügt:
das Heil der Seelen, so in Jesu liegt.
O selig! wer ihn in der Schrift erblickt,
wie er durch seine Lehren auf alle, die ihn hören,
ein geistlich Manna schickt.
Drum, wenn der Kummer gleich das Herze nagt und frißt,
so schmeckt und sehet doch, wie freundlich Jesus ist! |
Oh, that a Christian worries so much about his body!
What else is he?
A composition of earth,
that must turn back into earth,
a garment, but only borrowed.
He could, yes, choose a better one,
so never to deny his hope:
the salvation of the soul, which lies in Jesus.
O blessed! whoever views of him in scripture,
how he, through his teachings, to all who hear him
delivers a spiritual manna.
Thus when woe once gnaws and gorges the heart,
then taste and see indeed how kind Jesus is! |

|
Mein Heiland läßt sich merken
in seinen Gnadenwerken.
Da er sich kräftig weist,
den schwachen Geist zu lehren,
den matten Leib zu nähren,
dies sättigt Leib und Geist. |
My Savior makes himself apparent
in his works of mercy.
Where he powerfully exposes himself,
instructing the weak spirit,
nourishing the languid body,
this satiates body and soul. |

6. CHORAL |
|
Ob sichs anließ, als wollt er nicht,
laß dich es nicht erschrecken;
denn wo er ist am besten mit,
da will ers nicht entdecken.
Sein Wort laß dir gewisser sein,
und ob dein Herz spräch lauter Nein,
so laß doch dir nicht grauen. |
If it appears he is not willing,
let it not alarm you;
for where he is the most present
he wants it not to be apparent.
His word allows you to be certain,
and even if your heart loudly protests
still allow yourself no dread. |

7. REZITATIV (Baß) |
|
Es ist die Welt die große Wüstenei,
der Himmel wird zu Erz, die Erde wird zu Eisen,
wenn Christen durch den Glauben weisen,
daß Christi Wort ihr größter Reichtum sei;
der Nahrungssegen scheint
von ihnen fast zu fliehen,
ein steter Mangel wird beweint,
damit sie nur der Welt sich desto mehr entziehen;
da findet erst des Heilands Wort,
der höchste Schatz,
in ihren Herzen Platz.
Ja, jammert ihn des Volkes dort,
so muß auch hier sein Herze brechen
und über sie den Segen sprechen. |
The world, it is a great wilderness;
the sky turns to bronze, the earth turns to iron,
when Christians demonstrate through their faith,
that Christ’s word is their greatest possession;
blessings of sustenance seem
to almost flee before them,
a constant lacking will be bewailed,
by which they suck up even more from the world;
only here, by the Savior’s word,
the highest treasure finds
a place in their hearts.
Yes, if the people there lament to him,
so too must his heart here be breaking
and it speaks to them the benediction. |

Die Armen will der Herr umarmen
mit Gnaden hier und dort;
er schenket ihnen aus Erbarmen
den höchsten Schatz, das Lebenswort. |
The Lord will embrace the poor
with grace, both here and away;
he bestows on them, out of mercy,
the highest treasure, the word of life. |

9. REZITATIV (Alt) |
|
Nun mag die Welt mit ihrer Lust vergehen:
bricht gleich der Mangel ein,
doch kann die Seele freudig sein.
Wird durch dies Jammertal der Gang
zu schwer, zu lang,
in Jesu Wort liegt Heil und Segen.
Es ist ihres Fußes Leuchte und ein Licht auf ihren Wegen.
Wer gläubig durch die Wüste reist,
wird durch dies Wort getränkt, gespeist;
der Heiland öffnet selbst, nach diesem Worte,
ihm einst des Paradieses Pforte,
und nach vollbrachtem Lauf
setzt er den Gläubigen die Krone auf. |
Now may the world with its lusts pass away;
deficiency immediately closes in,
yet the soul can be joyful.
If passage through this vale of tears
becomes too difficult, too long,
in Jesus word lies salvation and blessing.
It is a lamp to their feet and a light to their paths.
Whoever faithfully journeys through the wilderness,
will be quenched and nourished by this word;
the Savior, according to this word, himself will open one day the gates to paradise for him,
and after the completed course
he will place the crown upon the believer. |

Laß, Seele, kein Leiden
von Jesu dich scheiden,
sei, Seele, getreu!
Dir bleibet die Krone
aus Gnaden zu Lohne,
wenn du von Banden des Leibes nun frei. |
Allow, soul, no affliction
to separate you from Jesus,
be, soul, faithful!
The crown lies in store for you
from grace, as reward,
as you are freed from your bodily bonds. |

11. CHORAL |
|
Die Hoffnung wart' der rechten Zeit,
was Gottes Wort zusaget.
Wenn das geschehen soll zur Freud,
setzt Gott kein gwiße Tage.
Er weiß wohl, wenns am besten ist,
und braucht an uns kein arge List,
des solln wir ihm vertrauen. |
Hope waits upon the proper time
which God’s word dictates.
When what shall transpire turns to joy,
God sets no certain day.
He knows well when it is best
and brings no dire deception upon us;
we shall trust him on this. |
