Text for Cantata 203
Amore traditore

Original Italian Text

English Translation

1. ARIA (Baß)

Amore traditore,
tu non m'inganni più.
Non voglio più catene,
non voglio affanni, pene,
cordoglio e servitù.

Treacherous Amore,
you may deceive me no more.
I want no more chains,
I want no worry, anxiety,
grief nor servitude.

2. REZITATIV (Baß)

Voglio provar,
se posso sanar
l'anima mia dalla piaga fatale,
e viver si può senza il tuo strale;
non sia più la speranza
lusinga del dolore,
e la gioja nel mio core,
più tuo scherzo sarà nella mia costanza.

I want to attempt
to heal my soul
of its fatal wounds,
and live without your arrows;
there is no more hope,
no flattery in sorrow,
nor joy in my heart,
your jesting is too much for my patience.

3. ARIA (Baß)

Chi in amore ha nemica la sorte,
è follia, se non lascia d'amar,
sprezzi l'alma le crude ritorte,
se non trova mercede al penar.

Whoever loves makes an enemy of fate
he is a fool, not to cease affections,
release the soul from these cruel constrictions
if it finds no reward for its misery.
