Text for Cantata 220
Lobt ihn mit Herz und Munde

Original German Text

English Translation

1.CHORALE

Lobt ihn mit Herz und Munde,
welch's er uns beides schenkt,
das ist ein' sel'ge Stunde,
darin man sein gedenkt;
sonst verdirbt alle Zeit,
die wir zubring'n auf Erden:
wir sollen selig werden
und bleib'n in Ewigkeit.

Praise him with heart and voice
both of which he bestows on us,
this is a blest hour,
in which one ponders him;
otherwise all time is wasted
which we spend on earth:
we shall be blest
and remain in eternity.

2. Aria (Tenor)

So praise the Most High, the King of Heaven,
so praise, you peoples, the King of Heaven,
who wonderfully grants us life and blessing.
Come, revere the trial of grace from above,
as testimony to how much the Savior loves us.

3. Rezitativ (Baß)

Auf Gottes Preis muß alle Freude zielen;
was Gott an ihr in aller Welt getan.
Sie siehet seine Macht und Gütigkeit,
die Strahlen, so die Wahrheit streut, in Demut an.
O Wohl, wo Herz und Mund
also in Freude schwimmen
und in des Höchsten Ruhm
vergnügt zusammen stimmen.

Toward the praise of God all joys must aim;
where God’s Spirit pours the oil of joy
there he soon lets sweet hope be felt,
and a heart senses of joyousness,
thus is the mouth prepared to glorify God.
John (the Baptist) himself, alive in the womb,
welcomes the Lord with a happy leap,
Elizabeth distinguishes the Savior of all the world,
Mary joins in her jubilation.
Mary will sing of righteousness and mercy,
at what God did in her for the entire world.
She beholds his might and benevolence,
the radiance, thus dispersed with humility.
O goodness, where heart and mouth
thus overflow in joy
and voice together in delight
the glory of the Most High.

4. Aria (Alt)

Sich in Gott und Jesu freuen,
ist ein Vorschmack jener Lust.
Welt, bei deinen grünen Maien
klebt verbot'ner Sündenwust.

Rejoicing in God and Jesus,
is a foretaste of yonder pleasure.
World, to your green May
cleaves a forbidden wilderness of sin.

5. Chor

Ich freue mich im Herrn,
und meine Seele ist fröhlich in meinem Gott.

I rejoice in the Lord,
and my soul is joyful in my God.
