|
Ein ungefärbt Gemüte
von deutscher Treu und Güte
macht uns vor Gott und Menschen schön.
Der Christen Tun und Handel,
ihr ganzer Lebenswandel
soll auf dergleichen Fuße stehn. |
An untainted character
of frank devotion and goodness
makes us appealing before God and humanity.
A Christian’s actions and dealings,
their entire way of life,
should stand on such footing as this. |

2. REZITATIV (Tenor) |
|
Die Redlichkeit ist eine von den Gottesgaben.
Daß sie bei unsrer Zeit so wenig Menschen haben,
das macht, sie bitten Gott nicht drum.
Denn von Natur geht unsers Herzens Dichten
mit lauter Bösem um;
soll's seinen Weg auf etwas Gutes richten,
so muß es Gott durch seinen Geist regieren
und auf der Bahn der Tugend führen.
Verlangst du Gott zum Freunde,
so mache dir den Nächsten nicht zum Feinde
durch Falschheit, Trug und List!
Ein Christ soll sich der Taubenart bestreben
und ohne Falsch und Tücke leben.
Mach aus dir selbst ein solches Bild,
wie du den Nächsten haben willt! |
Integrity is one of the gifts from God.
That so few humans in our time possess it
is caused due to them not requesting it of God.
For by nature the dictates of our heart
circumvent it out of sheer malevolence;
if their path somehow veers toward something
good it must have been led by God through his Spirit
and steered upon a course of virtue.
If you desire God as friend
then do not make enemy of your neighbor
through falsehood, deception or deceit!
A Christian should strive to be like a dove
and live without falsity or malice.
Make of yourself such an image
as you would desire in your neighbor! |

Alles nun, das ihr wollet,
daß euch die Leute tun sollen,
das tut ihr ihnen. |
Now in everything, do unto others
as you would have them
do unto you. |

Die Heuchelei ist eine Brut,
die Belial gehecket.
Wer sich in ihre Larve stecket,
der trägt des Teufels Liberei.
Wie? lassen sich denn Christen
dergleichen auch gelüsten?
Gott sei's geklagt! die Redlichkeit ist teuer.
Manch teuflisch Ungeheuer sieht wie ein Engel aus.
Man kehrt den Wolf hinein,
den Schafspelz kehrt man raus.
Wie könnt es ärger sein?
Verleumden, Schmähn und Richten,
Verdammen und Vernichten
ist überall gemein.
So geht es dort, so geht es hier.
Der liebe Gott behüte mich dafür! |
Hypocrisy is a brood
hatched by Belial (Satan).
Whoever hides among his larva
wears the Devil’s uniform.
How is it, that Christians
lust as well for such things?
God protest! integrity is precious.
Many a demonic monster appears like an angel.
It conceals a wolf inside
flaunting sheep’s fleece on the outside.
How could it be worse?
Slander, sarcasm and judging,
damnation and obliteration
are common everywhere.
As it occurs there, so it occurs here.
Dear God safeguard me from such as this! |

Treu und Wahrheit sei der Grund
aller deiner Sinnen,
wie von außen Wort und Mund,
sei das Herz von innen.
Gütig sein und tugendreich
macht uns Gott und Engeln gleich. |
Devotion and truth should be the basis
of all your intentions,
as words and talk seem on the outside,
so is the heart within.
Being kind and virtuous
likens us unto God and angels. |

Gott, du frommer Gott,
du Brunnquell aller Gaben,
ohn den nichts ist, was ist,
von dem wir alles haben,
gesunden Leib gib mir,
und daß in solchem Leib
ein unverletzte Seel
und rein Gewissen bleib. |
O God, you dutiful God,
the fountainhead of all gifts,
without whom nothing is that is,
from whom we have everything,
grant me a healthy body,
and that in such a body
resides an unscathed soul
and pure conscience. |
