Text for Cantata 42
Am Abend aber desselbigen Sabbats

Original German Text

English Translation

1. SINFONIA

2. REZITATIV (Tenor)

Am Abend aber desselbigen Sabbats,
da die Jünger versammlet
und die Türen verschlossen waren
aus Furcht für den Jüden,
kam Jesus und trat mitten ein.

On that same Sabbath evening, however,
as the disciples were gathered
and the doors were locked
out of fear of the Jews,
Jesus came and stepped into their midst.

3. ARIA (Alt)

Wo zwei und drei versammelt sind
in Jesu teurem Namen,
da stellt sich Jesus mitten ein
und spricht darzu das Amen.
Denn was aus Lieb und Not geschicht,
das bricht des Höchsten Ordnung nicht.

Where two or three are gathered
in Jesus precious name,
there Jesus is present in their midst
and speaks for them a benediction.
For whatever is fashioned on love and need
the highest order cannot breach.

4. DUETT (Sopran, Tenor)

Verzage nicht, o Häuflein klein,
obschon die Feinde willens sein,
dich gänzlich zu verstören,
und suchen deinen Untergang,
davon dir wird recht angst und bang:
es wir nicht lange währen.

Do not despair, O little band,
although it be the enemies will
to completely confound you,
and they seek your demise,
though you justly fear and dread them:
it will not last for long.

5. REZITATIV (Baß)

Man kann hiervon ein schön Exempel sehen
an dem, was zu Jerusalem geschehen;

From this one can observe a fine example
in that which occurred at Jerusalem;
for when the disciples had gathered together
in darkened shadow,
out of fear of the Jews,
so stepped my Savior into their midst
confirming that he will be his church's protector.
Therefore let the enemy rage!

6. ARIA (Baß)

Jesus ist ein Schild der Seinen,
wenn sie die Verfolgung trifft.
Ihnen muß die Sonne scheinen
mit der güldnen Überschrift:
Jesus ist ein Schild der Seinen,
wenn sie die Verfolgung trifft.

Jesus is a shield for his own,
whenever they meet persecution.
On them the sun must shine
with this golden inscription:
Jesus is a shield for his own,
whenever they meet persecution.

7. CHORAL

Verleih uns Frieden gnädiglich,
Herr Gott, zu unsern Zeiten;
es ist doch ja kein andrer nicht,
der für uns könnte streiten,
denn du, unsr Gott, alleine.
Gib unsern Fürsten und allr Obrigkeit
Fried und gut Regiment,
daß wir unter ihnen
ein geruhig und stilles Leben führen mögen
in aller Gottseligkeit und Ehrbarkeit.
Amen.

Lend us peace, graciously,
Lord God, within our time;
there is, yes indeed, no one else
who could fight for us,
other than you our God alone.
Grant our princes and all authorities
peace and good governance,
that we below them
may lead a quiet and tranquil life
in all godliness and decency.
Amen.
