Text for Cantata 77
Du sollt Gott, deinen Herren, lieben

Original German Text

English Translation

1. CHOR

Du sollt Gott, deinen Herren, lieben von ganzem Herzen,
von ganzer Seele, von allen Kräften
und von ganzem Gemüte
und deinen Nächsten als dich selbst.

You shall love God, your Lord, with whole heart,
with whole soul, with all strength
and with whole mind
and your neighbor as yourself.

So it must be!
God will have the heart for himself alone:
one must choose the Lord
with whole soul as his desire,
and no longer take delight
other than when he ignites the mind
through his Spirit,
for only of his grace and goodness
are we thus first truly assured.

3. ARIA (Sopran)

Mein Gott, ich liebe dich von Herzen,
mein ganzes Leben hangt dir an.
Laß mich doch dein Gebot erkennen
und in Liebe so entbrennen,
daß ich dich ewig lieben kann.

My God, I love you from the heart,
my entire life hangs on to you.
Let me yet acknowledge your commandments
and be so aflame in love
that I can love you eternally.

4. REZITATIV (Tenor)

Gib mir dabei, mein Gott! ein Samariterherz,
daß ich zugleich den Nächsten liebe
und mich bei seinem Schmerz
auch über ihn betrübe,
damit ich nicht bei ihm vorübergeh
und ihn in seiner Not nicht laße.
Gib, daß ich Eigenliebe haße,
so wirst du mir dereinst das Freudenleben
nach meinem Wunsch, jedoch aus Gnaden geben.

Grant me therewith, my God!
the heart of a Samaritan,
that I likewise love my neighbor
and that I also grieve for him in his pain,
that I neither pass him by
nor abandon him in his need.
Grant, that I detest self-love,
then one day you will bestow on me a life of joy,
by my wish, yet only out of grace.

5. ARIA (Alt)

Ach, es bleibt in meiner Liebe
lauter Unvollkommenheit!
Hab ich oftmals gleich den Willen,
was Gott saget, zu erfüllen,
fehlt mirs doch an Möglichkeit.

Alas, there remains in my love
vast imperfection!
Though I often have a will the same
to fulfill what God says,
the capability indeed fails me.

6. CHORAL

Herr, durch den Glauben wohn in mir,
laß ihn sich immer stärken,
daß er sei fruchtbar für und für
und reich in guten Werken;
daß er sei tätig durch die Lieb,
mit Freuden und Geduld sich üb,
dem Nächsten fort zu dienen.

Lord, abide in me though faith,
let it grow ever stronger
that it be fruitful forever and ever
and rich in good works;
that it be active through love,
exercising joy and patience,
onward to serve my neighbor.
