Text for Cantata 83
Erfreute Zeit im neuen Bunde

Original German Text

English Translation

1. ARIA (Alt)

Erfreute Zeit im neuen Bunde,
da unser Glaube Jesum hält.
Wie freudig wird zur letzten Stunde
die Ruhestatt, das Grab bestellt!

Gladsome time in the new covenant
where our faith holds Jesus.
How joyously will, in the final hour,
that place of rest, the grave, be appointed!

2. REZITATIV; ARIA (Baß)

Herr, nun läßest du deinen Diener
in Friede fahren, wie du gesaget hast.

Was uns als Menschen schrecklich scheint,

Lord, now you let your servant
depart in peace, as you have foretold.

What appears dreadful to us as humans
is for us an entryway into life.
Death, it is an ending to this time and agony,
a pledge which the Lord gave us
as a sign that he sincerely intends
and wants through full-fledged wrestling
to bring us unto peace.
And because the Savior is now
a comfort to the eye and the heart's refreshment
what wonder that a heart forgets its fear of death!
It can make the gladsome statement:

For my eyes have beheld your Savior,
which you have prepared for all peoples.

3. ARIA (Tenor)

Eile, Herz, voll Freudigkeit
vor den Gnadenstuhl zu treten!
Du sollst deinen Trost empfangen
und Barmherzigkeit erlangen,
ja, bei kummervoller Zeit,
stark am Geiste, kräftig beten.

Hasten, heart, full of joyfulness
to step before the throne of grace!
You shall receive your consolation
and acquire compassion,
even in grief-stricken times,
strong in spirit, pray boldly.

4. REZITATIV (Alt)

Ja, merkt dein Glaube noch viel Finsternis,
dein Heiland kann der Zweifel Schatten trennen;
ja, wenn des Grabes Nacht
die letzte Stunde schrecklich macht,
so wirst du doch gewiss
sein helles Licht im Tode selbst erkennen.

Yes, though your faith still notes great darkness
your Savior can sever the shadow of doubt;
yes, when the night of the grave
makes for a horrific final hour
so you will but certainly
perceive his bright light in death itself.

5. CHORAL

Er ist das Heil und selig Licht
für die Heiden,
zu erleuchten, die dich kennen nicht,
und zu weiden.
Er ist deins Volks Israel
der Preis, Ehre, Freud und Wonne.

He is the salvation and blessed light
for the heathens,
to enlighten those who do not know you,
and set them to pasture.
He is for your people, Israel,
the praise, glory, joy and bliss.
