Text for Cantata 97
In allen meinen Taten

Original German Text

English Translation

1. CHOR

In allen meinen Taten
laß ich den Höchsten raten,
der alles kann und hat;
er muß zu allen Dingen,
solls anders wohl gelingen,
selbst geben Rat und Tat.

In all my deeds
I let the Most High counsel,
who can do all and has;
he must, in all things,
if they shall indeed succeed,
himself grant counsel and deed.

2. ARIA (Baß)

Nichts ist es spat und frühe
um alle meine Mühe,
mein Sorgen ist umsonst.
Er mags mit meinen Sachen
nach seinem Willen machen,
ich stells in seine Gunst.

Nothing is too late or early
regarding any of my labors,
my worries are unwarranted.
He desires that my doings
act according to his will,
I rely on his kindness.

3. REZITATIV (Tenor)

Es kann mir nichts geschehen,
als was er hat versehen,
und was mir selig ist:
ich nehm es, wie ers gibet;
was ihm von mir beliebet,
das hab ich auch erkiest.

Nothing can happen to me,
but that which he enacts,
and what a blessing to me:
I receive it, as he grants it:
whatever he fancies of me,
this I do also elect.

4. ARIA (Tenor)

Ich traue seiner Gnaden,
die mich vor allem Schaden,
vor allem Übel schützt.
Leb ich nach seinen Gesetzen,
so wird mich nichts verletzen,
nichts fehlen, was mir nützt.

I trust in his grace,
which protects me
from all injury and all evil.
If I live by his commandments
then nothing can harm
or fail me, which is to my benefit.

5. REZITATIV (Alt)

Er wolle meiner Sünden
in Gnaden mich entbinden,
durchstreichen meine Schuld!
Er wird auf mein Verbrechen
nicht stracks das Urteil sprechen
und haben noch Geduld.

He will through grace
unbind me from my sins,
crossing out my guilt!
He will not suddenly speak judgment
over my trespasses
and will yet have patience.

6. ARIA (Alt)

Leg ich mich späte nieder,
erwache frühe wieder,
lieg oder ziehe fort,
in Schwachheit und in Banden,
und was mir stößt zuhanden,
so tröstet mich sein Wort.

Late I lay myself down
to rise early once more,
reclining or dragged forth,
in frailty and in shackles,
and all that is thrust upon me,
still his word comforts me.

7. ARIA (Sopran, Baß)

Hat er es denn beschlossen,
so will ich unverdrossen
an mein Verhängnis gehn!
Kein Unfall unter allen
soll mir zu harte fallen,
ich will ihn überstehn.

If he has then so ordained
so shall I undaunted
proceed toward my fate!
No disaster among them all
shall impact me too severely,
I will survive them.

8. ARIA (Sopran)

Ihm hab ich mich ergeben
zu sterben und zu leben,
sobald er mir gebeut.
Es sei heut oder morgen,
dafür laß ich ihn sorgen;
er weiß die rechte Zeit.

I have devoted myself to him
to die and to live,
as soon as he compels me.
Be it today or tomorrow,
I let him worry about that;
he knows the proper time.

9. CHORAL

So sein nun, Seele, deine
und traue dem alleine,
der dich erschaffen hat;
es gehe, wie es gehe,
dein Vater in der Höhe
weiß allen Sachen Rat.

So now, soul, be of your own
and trust in him alone
who has created you;
whatever will be will be,
your Father on high
knows counsel for all things.
