The American tenor, Michael Anderson, attended Manhattan School of Music, where he received his Bachelor of Music degree (2010-2014) and his Masters of Music degree (2014-2016). As a student, he sang Mayor Upfold in Benjamin Britten's Albert Herring and Tigrane in La Doriclea. He also performed the tenor solo in King David and Obadiah in Felix Mendelssohn's Elijah with the Manhattan School of Music Symphonic Chorus and Orchestra, and appeared as the tenor soloist in L.v. Beethoven's Symphony No. 9 with the Guelph Symphony Orchestra. Honored with the Christopher Kiryluk Memorial Award by Central City Opera, he was a finalist in the Opera Index Competition in 2017. He was also a finalist in the New Jersey State Opera Alfredo Silipigni Vocal Competition and in Manhattan School of Music's Alan M. and Joan Taub Ades Vocal Competition.
Michael Anderson has participated in Young Artist Programs at Central City Opera (2016) where he sang Jimmy in Later the Same Evening and at Wolf Trap Opera (2015, 2014), where he performed in the Opera Box Quartet, covered Count Almaviva in The Ghosts of Versailles, and performed Le Journaliste in Les mamelles de Tirésias. He also participated in Opera on the Avalon, where he sang Tamino in W.A. Mozart's Die Zauberflöte, Gherardo in Gianni Schicchi, and the tenor solo in the W.A. Mozart's Requiem; in the CoOPERAtive Program, where he sang selections of the Verdi's Requiem; and in The Institute for Young Dramatic Voices, where he performed scenes from L'Elisir d'amore.
As a Studio Artist at Opera Saratoga in 2017, Michael Anderson sang Bardolfo in Falstaff, garnering recognition from Opera News as "the best" of the opera's "comic trio" and as "vocally disciplined." While at Opera Saratoga, he was thrilled to perform Gus Polock and Professor Trixie in The Cradle Will Rock under the baton of John Mauceri. The commercial recording of this performance was released by Bridge Records in July 2018. He appeared in 2018 as an Artist in Residence with Dayton Opera, singing the Sergeant in Il barbiere di Siviglia and Pong in Turandot. While in Dayton, he also performed as the Soloist in George Frideric Handel's Messiah with Dayton Philharmonic and in the Bernstein Songfest as well as in other outreach concerts and recitals. His other work in 2017 and 2018 includes the role of the Evangelist and Servus in J.S. Bach's Johannes-Passion BWV 245 and the Soloist in G.F. Handel's Messiah with the Westchester Oratorio Society (Director: Benjamin Niemczyk) , the Soloist in Farewell to Arms with the New York Sessions Symphony, and the Soloist in Lobgesang and the W.A. Mozart's Requiem with the Manhattan School of Music Symphonic Chorus and Orchestra.
Last season (2018-2019), Michael Anderson was part of the Apprentice Artist programs for both Des Moines Metro Opera and Palm Beach Opera. With PBO, he made his debut in the role of Dr. Blind in Die Fledermaus. During his apprenticeship, he also covered Giuseppe and Gastone in PBO’s production of La Traviata. During the 2019-2020 season, he appeared as a Young Artist with Nashville Opera, where he performed the roles of Peter Quint/Narrator in B. Britten's The Turn of the Screw, King Kaspar in Amahl and the Night Visitors, and David in Pepito. He will return to Opera Saratoga in the summer 2020 as a Young Artist and will perform the role of Ira in their production of Sky on Swings.
In addition to the roles above, Michael Anderson has appeared in full productions of Macbeth, Lucia di Lammermoor, Carmen, W.A. Mozart's Le nozze di Figaro, La Bohème, L'enfant et les sortilèges, The Ballad of Baby Doe, and Tosca. His scenes work includes pieces from Eugene Onegin, Georges Bizet's Carmen, Volpone, Igor Stravinsky's The Rake's Progress, Little Women, G. Bizet's Les Pêcheurs de Perles, The Crucible, Francis Poulenc's Dialogues des Carmelites, W.A. Mozart's Idomeneo, and Street Scene.
Michael Anderson lives in New York City, where he is currently a voice student of Catherine Malfitano, and has been since 2015. |
