The American bass-baritone, oboist, pianist, conductor and music teacher, John Kendall Bailey, studied at University of California, Berkeley (1992-1997)
John Kendall Bailey has held positions including Principal Conductor of Oakland Symphony Youth Orchestra (July 2011-June 2013), Music Director and Conductor of Trinity Lyric Opera (March 2006-March 2010), and Guest Conductor with Oakland Symphony (April 2011: Bernard Herrmann's suite from the film Vertigo), Oakland Ballet (November-December 1999), Palo Alto Philharmonic, Folsom Lake Symphony, Sonoma County Philharmonic (September 2008-April 2012: 5 times), Diablo Symphony Orchestra, Magik*Magik Orchestra, San Francisco Civic Symphony, San Francisco Concerto Orchestra, Santa Rosa Junior College, and has conducted productions for Festival Opera of Walnut Creek (April-June 2010: Puccini's Madama Butterfly), West Bay Opera (April-June 2010), North Bay Opera (August 2004-May 2005), Pocket Opera, Mission City Opera (June-November 2006), Cinnabar Theater, San Francisco Conservatory of Music, the Crowden School, Oakland School for the Arts. He has also served as Choral Director with Voices of Musica Sacra (June 2006-June 2012), Festival Opera of Walnut Creek (April 2002-August 2006) and Opera San Jose, as Guest Conductor for the UC Berkeley Chamber Chorus (January-May 2008), the UC Davis Choruses, Contra Costa Chorale, and as a cover/rehearsal conductor for orchestras including Berkeley Symphony, Modesto Symphony, and Young People’s Symphony Orchestra; Founder, Music Director & Conductor of Berkeley Lyric Opera (January 1994-June 2001); Artistic Director of San Francisco Song Festival (June 2007-June 2009); Temporary Music Director of Calvary Presbyterian Church, San Francisco (April 2014-September 2015). He has taught conducting at the University of California-Davis and Notre Dame de Namur University.
John Kendall Bailey is currently Music Director of the Mozart to Mendelssohn Orchestra (since August 2016) and the Mesopotamia Symphony Orchestra (since 2019), Associate Conductor of the San Francisco Composers Chamber Orchestra (since October 2001), and Music Director of Danville Congregational Church (since August 2016).
John Kendall Bailey maintains a busy performance schedule as a bass-baritone, oboist and pianist, having performed with the Prometheus Symphony, but then over the years with the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra, Santa Rosa, Oakland, Berkeley, Redding, Napa, and Sacramento symphonies; American Bach Soloists (Director: Jeffrey Thomas), Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra (Directors: Nicholas McGegan/Richard Egarr); the Midsummer Mozart and West Marin music festivals, San Francisco Bach Choir, Coro Hispano de San Francisco, Berkeley Opera and many other regional groups. He has recorded for the Harmonia Mundi, Koch International, Pro Musica, Wildboar, Centaur, and Angelus Music labels.
As a composer, his works have been performed and commissioned in the Bay Area and abroad. Audiences also know him as the pre-performance lecturer for the Oakland East Bay Symphony and the San Francisco Opera, and also as a music critic for the San Francisco Classical Voice and writer of real-time commentary for the Concert Companion. |
