Virginia Barrios (Soprano)

Born: Chile

The Chilean soprano, Virginia Cecilia Barrios, began to study piano at the Universidad de Chile at the age of 10. In 2004 she started to study singing with Fernando Lara and Patricia Cifuentes, graduating in 2013. She perfected herself in Weimar with Michael Gehrke. She won two years of the "Amigos del Teatro Municipal" Scholarship.

Virginia Barrios made her debut as The Queen of the Night in W.A. Mozart's Die Zauberflöte, conducted by Miryam Singer, in Iquique, Antofagasta, Viña del Mar and Santiago; then Benjamin Britten's The Rape of Lucretia, and the role of Belinda in Dido and Eneas by Purcell at GAM, conducted by Paula Torres, and Heitor Villa-Lobos' Bachianas Brasileñas, at the Universidad de Chile, as a tribute to cellist Roberto González.

In the musical genre Virginia Barrios performed Antonia Quijano in El Hombre de la Mancha conducted by Juan Edwards at the Teatro Municipal de Las Condes. In this same theater and conducted by Eduardo Browne and Miryam Singer, she performed Lauretta in Gianni Schicchi by Puccini, Luigia in Le Convenienze ed Inconvenienze Teatrali by Donizetti, in whose inserts she performed “Quandom'en vo” in La Boheme by Puccini, Isabel I del dúo de Reinas in Maria Stuarda by Donizetti, and Iphigenia by Glück, “Grands Dieux soyez nous secourables”.

In the field of early music Virginia Barrios sang Diana in Acteón by Charpentier performed at the GAM, conducted by Felipe Hidalgo, Nymphs in Orfeo by Monteverdi in Rancagua conducted by Eduardo Egüez, La Leyenda in Jephte by Giaccomo Carissimi at the Teatro Oriente in Providencia conducted by Sylvia Soublette.

Last year she performed Carmina Burana by Orff at the Teatro Municipal of Antofagasta, and this year again at the Huanchaca ruins, with the orquesta Sinfónica de Antofagasta conducted by Pedro Baeza. She sang the role of Olimpia, “La Muñeca” from Offenbach's Tales by Hoffmann at the Teatro Municipal del Maule in Talca and a tour of different venues in the region, conducted by Octavio Torres. She recently won the International Opera Competition, Chile - Italy, organized by Assiciazione Amici della Musica - Alcamo - Sicilia, which entitles her to participate directly in the semifinal in Italy. She recently she was a soloist in Carmina Burana for the 20th Anniversary of the Teatro Municipal of Temuco, conducted by David Ayma.
