The American baritone and music educator, Fredy Bonilla, obtained his his Bachelor of Choral Music Education degree from the University of Houston's Moores School of Music (August 2008-May 2013). He studied voice under Hector Vasquez and was a member of the Moores School Concert Chorale and the Moores Opera Center. He obtained his Master of Music degree in Early Music Voice from the Yale School of Music and Yale Institute of Sacred Music (fall of 2023-May 2025), studying Voice, Chamber, and Oratorio music with professor James Taylor.
Fredy Bonilla taught high school choir in the Houston area for 7 years. Choirs under his direction received “Superior”, “Sweepstakes”, and “Best in Class” awards at state UIL and area festivals. Outside of teaching he performed with vocal ensembles in the Houston area including Cantare Houston, the Houston Chamber Choir, and the Houston Grand Opera Chorus. He has also sung in local area churches including Christ Church Cathedral (Episcopal) in Houston, and has sung in evensongs in England, Scotland, and Ireland as ensemble member, soloist, and cantor.
As a member of the Yale Voxtet, Fredy Bonilla has sung as bass soloist for Yale Schola Cantorum, and has sung under the direction of David Hill, Masaaki Suzuki, Jeffrey Douma, and Felicia Barber. At Yale he performed as bass soloist for George Frideric Handel's L’Allegro, il Penseroso ed il Moderato, conducted by Bach Collegium Japan's Masaaki Suzuki with Yale Schola Cantorum, G.F. Handel's Messiah with Yale Glee Club. In the summer of 2024, he toured the UK as the bass soloist in J.S. Bach's Mass in B minor BWV 232 conducted by David Hill with Yale Schola Cantorum and Juilliard415. In 2025 he was finalist and received encouragement awards for the Lyndon B Woodside Oratorio Competition in New York, and the Handel Aria Competition in Madison, Wisconsin.
Fredy Bonilla is currently based in New Haven, Connecticut and can be found singing in various ensembles and as soloist in New England and around the USA. |
