The French bass-baritone, Jean-Manuel Candenot, graduated in Contemporary History and as Primary School Teacher. He then studied piano and choral singing (Chœur Régional de Toulouse, Midi-Pyrénées), lyric association Les Chants de Garonne directed by Jean-François Gardeil (1996). After studying piano, he turned to singing and became a student of Lionel Sarrazin, and graduated with D.E.M. d’Art Lyrique from Bordeaux C.N.R. His diverse vocal practice has led him to explore a wide repertoire ranging from 16th-century polyphony to contemporary works. He won a first prize at the “Concours Supérieur de Chant de l’UFAM in Paris”, as well as the Prix « Mélodie Contemporaine des Editions Henri Lemoine » at the international competition of French Melody in Toulouse.
Jean-Manuel Candenot made his soloist debut in 1996 when joining the lyric association “Les Chants de Garonne” directed by Jean-François Gardeil. There he performed various repertoires : Prométhé in Charpentier’s La descente d’Orphée aux Enfers; Merlin and the Duc in Boismortier's Don Quichotte chez la Duchesse; Sprecher in W.A. Mozart's Die Zauberflöte; Ramon in Charles Gounod's Mireille; Le Vice Roi in Offenbach's La Périchole; Le Marquis de la Force in Francis Poulenc's Le dialogue des Carmélites. He regularly collaborates with the ensemble Musicatreize (Victoire de la Musique 2007). He has performed at numerous festivals, including La Chaise-Dieu, Venice (Palazzetto Bru-Zane, under the direction of François-Xavier Roth), and Salzburg in Claude Vivier's "Journal."
Jean-Manuel Candenot has performed as baritone soloist in Massenet's Cantata Louise de Mézières by in concert at Opéra-Comique in Paris, Stárek in Janacek’s Jenufa at National Opera of Bordeaux; Cithéron in Rameau's Platée; contemporary creation from the Finnish composer Tapio Tuomela; Un retour contemporary opera by Oscar Strasnoy adapted from Alberto Manguel at Aix-en-Provence Festival (July 2010); the Chef de la Police in Péter Eötvös' “Le Balcon” (directed by Gerd Heinz); the Sprecher in W.A. Mozart's Die Zauberflöte; Fernand in L. Tiyhani’s Genitrix (world creation) adapted from F. Mauriac and Familiari di Seneca and Littore in Monteverdi's L'Incoronazione di Poppea, directed by Robert Carsen at the National Opera of Bordeaux; The Enterrement de Mozart by the young French composer Bruno Mantovani at Besancon’s Festival and a piece from the Lebanese composer Zad Moultaka at Avignon’s Festival; le Moine sculpteur in Massenet's Le Jongleur de Notre-Dame in Saint-Etienne Opera; Golaud in Debussy’s Pelléas et Mélisande in Marius Constant's version; Salieri in Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov's‘s Mozart et Salieri; Gaudenzio in Rossini's Il Signor Bruschino at the National Opera of Bordeaux.
His concert repertoire covers a wide range: from contemporary composers particularly with Musicatreize (Victoire de la Musique 2007) whom he collaborates with regularly for prestigious festivals (Folles Journées in Nantes, Sao Paulo, Budapest…) to oratorio: J. Haydn's Paukenmesse, Franz von Suppé's Missa pro defunctis (Requiem), Johannes Brahms' Ein Deutsches Requiem, César Franck's Les Sept paroles du Christ, G. Rossini's La Petite Messe Solennelle… and French (Francis Poulenc, Ibert, Pesson) and English (Finzi, John Ireland) melodies. In 2009, he performed at the Midis Musicaux Festival of the Grand Theater of Bordeaux, singing melodies and opera arias.
Jean-Manuel Candenot has worked with reknown musicians such as Jean-Marc Andrieu, Pierre Cao, Michel Piquemal, François-Xavier Roth (Les Siècles) in W.A. Mozart's Requiem at Aix-en-Provence’s GTP. He was a member of Choeur de Radio France (Director: Lionel Sow); and is now a member of Vlaams Radio Koor (since January 2023; Director: Bart Van Reyn). |
