Kieran Carrel (Tenor)

Born: March 25, 1996 - Gütersloh, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany

The Anglo-German tenor, Kieran Carrel, received his first musical education as a choirboy in the Knabenchor Gütersloh and Bachchor Gütersloh. After finishing school he started his studies with German tenor Christoph Prégardien in Cologne. He continued his education at London’s Royal Academy of Music with Neil Mackie (2016-2019).

Kieran Carrel has a busy and varied career, active in Opera, Concert and Recital. In season 2019-2020 season, he joined the Theater Bonn where he debuted as Peppe in Pagliacci. Other roles at Theater Bonn include Jacquino in L.v. Beethoven's Fidelio, Hotelporter in Benjamin Britten's Death in Venice and Sohn des Oberbademeisters in Mauricio Kagel's Staatstheater. In the summer of 2020 he made his debut in Joseph Haydn's rarely performed opera Armida at the Bregenzer Festspiele, where he also appeared in their production of Rigoletto on the lake.

As a member of the Deutsche Oper Berlin (since 2022), his repertoire includes Tamino in W.A. Mozart's Die Zauberflöte; Don Ottavio in W.A. Mozart's Don Giovanni; Walther in Tannhäuser; Erik in Der fliegende Holländer; Froh in Das Rheingold; Narraboth in Salome; Alfred in Die Fledermaus; Count Almaviva in Il barbiere di Siviglia and Lysander in Benjamin Britten's A Midsummer Night’s Dream.

Recent concerts include Haydn’s Die Schöpfung with the Thomanerchor Leipzig; Evangelist in J.S. Bach's Johannes-Passion BWV 245 with The English Concert and Antwerp Symphony Orchestra and Robert Schumann's Das Paradies und die Peri in Utrecht with the Netherlands Radio Philharmonic Orchestra.

Concert highlights in the current season (2024-2015) and beyond include Felix Mendelssohn's Lobgesang with the Netherlands Radio Philharmonic Orchestra and Diego Fasolis; a recording and tour of R. Schumann's Das Paradies und die Peri with Jordi Savall; J.S. Bach's Weihnachts-Oratorium BWV 248 with the WDR Sinfonieorchester Köln, Rundfunk-Sinfonieorchester Berlin and the Gewandhausorchester Leipzig and Evangelist in both the J.S. Bach's Johannes-Passion BWV 245 with the Netherlands Chamber Orchestra and Daniel Reuss and J.S. Bach's Matthäus-Passion BWV 244 with the Noord Nederlands Orkest and Hartmut Haenchen.

Kieran Carrel made his recital debut at the Pierre Boulez Saal in Berlin in 2019 as part of the Heidelberger Frühling Schubert Week with Thomas Hampson and Hartmut Höll and in the same year was a finalist in the Wigmore Hall/Independent Opera International Song Competition, together with duo partner Richard Gowers. He recently performed a Schubert programme with Kristian Bezuidenhout at the 2024 MA Festival in Brugge, appeared at the Luxembourg Philharmonie with Graham Johnson and made his debut at the Schubertiade Schwarzenburg. His connection to the Pierre Boulez Saal and Wigmore Hall continues with solo recitals in both halls, and, in addition, he has appeared at Wigmore Hall in a Hugo Wolf Song Gala with Christoph Prégardien and James Baillieu: sung Haydn canzonettas with András Schiff and Ralph Vaughan Williams' Serenade to Music with the Nash Ensemble.

Kieran Carrel has taken part in a complete Johannes Brahms's Lieder disc with Ulrich Eisenlohr on Naxos and other recordings include W.A. Mozart's Requiem with Il Gardellino; Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach's Die Auferstehung und Himmelfahrt Jesu; Wolf Italienisches Liederbuch and R. Schumann's Dichterliebe with Ensemble Opus and Ralf Gothoni.
