The English counter-tenor, Alexander Chance, took up the recorder at the age of 7, and sang as a treble in the Eton Chapel Choir under Ralph Allwood before moving to counter-tenor for his last three years. He graduated in 2015 having read Classics at New College, Oxford, where he was a choral scholar under the direction of Edward Higginbottom for three years, and then of Robert Quinney for one.
Many opportunities for solo performances came his way all over the world, most notably in Grace Cathedral, San Francisco where he sang the alto arias in J.S. Bach's St John Passion (BWV 245). He also made a number of recordings with the Choir of New College, Oxford, including an upcoming CD of John Blow verse anthems.
Recent appearances have included a joint recital with his father, Michael Chance, in the 2015 Stour Festival, George Frideric Handel's Saul with the Choir of the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment at the Enescu Festival in Bucharest, solo appearances under Mark Deller at St Mary's Ashford and Richard Cooke at Canterbury Cathedral, and regularly under Tom Hammond-Davies as part of the Oxford Bach Soloists programme. He also works frequently with ensembles such as Tenebrae (Director: Nigel Short), The Tallis Scholars (Director: Peter Phillips) and Vox Luminis (Director: Lionel Meunier). He recently (2016) joined the vocal ensemble The Gesualdo Six. He is also a keen sportsman, and represented New College in both football and cricket, despite, in the case of the latter, often having to leave after the first innings to go and sing. |
