Yohan Cho (Counter-tenor)

Born: South Korea

The Korean counter-tenor, Yohan Cho (Korean: 조요한), graduated from Yeungnam University's Department of Vocal Music and received a Master's degree in Vocal Music from Karlsruhe National University of Music (Professor Donald Litaker), Germany (Singing, Masters with distinction) After graduating with the highest score, he graduated from the Rostock National University of Music (Professor Klaus Häger), Germany (Concert-exam with distinction), and graduated from Postgraduate studies from the Mozarteum National University of Salzburg (Austria: Professor Thérèse Lindquist). While studying in Germany, he received special prizes at the Karlsruhe National Music Competition (Freudeskreiswettbewerb) and the German Maritim Singing Competition (Maritim Gesangswettbewerb) to be recognized for his skills. He continued to participate in the master-classes of famous singers David Greiner, Gerd Türk, and Maria Jonas. He continued his career as a musician.

Yohan Cho has been recognized for his lyrical tone, delicate musical expression and accurate and clean diction. After returning to Korea, Yohan Cho has performed various oratorios with Gangnam Symphony Orchestra, National Choir, Daejeon City Choir, Suwon City Choir, Ansan City Choir, Dangjin City Choir, Jangsin University, etc. He has sung George Frideric Handel's Messiah (Daejeon Arts Center); J.S. Bach's Matthäus-Passion BWV 244 with Daejeon City Choir conducted by Winfried Toll (Lotte Concert Hall); Georg Philipp Telemann's Der Tod Jesu with Bachsolisten Seoul conducted by Alfredo Bernardini (IBK Chamber Hall); Monteverdi's Vespro Della Beata Vergine with Suwon City Choir conducted by Earl Rivers; G.F. Handel's Dixit Dominus conducted by Eui-Jung Yoon; G.F. Handel's Judas Maccabaeus, Israel in Egypt with Presbyterian Theological Seminary conducted by Chang-Hoon Park; Felix Mendelssohn’s Lauda Sion Op. 73, Magnificat, J.S. Bach's Magnificat in D major BWV 243, L.v. Beethoven’s Missa in C, Leonard Bernstein's Chichester Psalms with National Choir and Dangjin Municipal Choir conducted by Baek Kyung-wha; Holiness University J.S. Bach's Johannes-Passion BWV 245; G.F. Handel's Dixit Dominus with Ansan City Choir conducted by Park Shin-Hwa; W.A. Mozart Missa brevis in D minor with ​​Anthem Choral; Antonio Vivaldi’s Gloria with Gongju City Choir; Karl Orff's Carmina Burana, etc.

For overseas performances, Yohan Cho was invited to the Greifswalder Bachwoche in Germany in 2012 and 2015 to perform G.F. Handel's oratorio Saul and Dietrich Buxtehude's Membra Jesu Nostri under the direction of Jochen A. Modess. As for opera works, he appeared in G.F. Handel's Rinaldo (as Rinaldo) and Seymour Barab’s La Pizza con Funghi (as Phobia).

Yohan Cho served as a practical lecturer in the Department of Vocal Music at Yeungnam University and is currently active as a professional performer.
