The American baritone, Daniel Cilli, studied Music and Visual Arts at Daytona State College (1994-1997); obtained his Bachelor of Music degree from Stetson University (1997-2000); and his Master of Music degree New England Conservatory of Music (2000-2002), where he performed at the Opera Studio and Opera Theater the roles of Sid in Benjamin Britten's Albert Herringarmen and Figaro in W.A. Mozart's Le Nozze di Figaro. He also studied Lieder at the Franz Schubert Institute of Baden bei Wien, Austria.
As a Studio Artist at the Houston Grand Opera (August 2004-May 2005), Daniel Cilli was involved in four productions including two world premieres: performing in Mark Adamo’s Lysistrata and covering the role of Chucho in Daniel Catan’s Salsipuedes. He has also appeared as a Apprentice Artist/Studio Artist at Utah Symphony & Opera (August 2002-May 2004); Apprentice Artist at Central City Opera (June-July 2004); and Principal Artist at Des Moines Metro Opera (May-July 2007). While a principal baritone at Opera San José (July 2006-June 2010), he performed 15 roles including: Onegin in Eugene Onegin, Mercutio in Roméo et Juliette, Dandini in La Cenerentola, Count Almaviva in W.A. Mozart's Le Nozze di Figaro, Guglielmo in W.A. Mozart's Cosí fan tutte, Papageno in W.A. Mozart's Die Zauberflöte, Escamillo in Georges Bizet's Carmen, Figaro in Il Barbiere di Siviglia, Albert in Werther, Belcore in L’Elisir d’amore, Marullo in Rigoletto, and others.
In April 2014 Daniel Cilli performed Inspector Javert in Utah Festival's production of Les Miserables. Some of his other operatic appearances include the title role in W.A. Mozart's Don Giovanni at West Bay Opera, Harlekin in Ariadne auf Naxos with West Edge Opera and Festival Opera, and Papageno in a semi-staged production of Die Zauberflöte with the Baltimore Symphony under Marin Alsop. In 2016, he debuted as Dancaïro in G. Bizet's Carmen at the San Francisco Opera and has returned for multiple engagements. He has performed with Opera Parallèle, Livermore Valley, West Bay, Festival Opera, Left Coast Chamber Ensemble, Utah Opera, Des Moines Metro Opera, and with the wrestlers from Oakland’s own: Hoodslam.
In recent years, Daniel Cilli most recently performed the role of Cervantes/Quixote in Man of Mancha at Cinnabar Theater (September 2017); Captain Ladoux in Matt Marks' Mata Hari at West Edge Opera (August 2018); the title role of Sweeney Todd at Enlightened Theatrics (October-November 2018); Mansfield in the premiere of Hiroya Miura's Sharaku Unframed at Left Coast Chamber Ensemble (October 2019); Pa Zegner in Proving Up at Pasadena Opera (January 2020); Schaunard in Boheme Out of the Box with San Francisco Opera (November-December 2022); Mark Torrance in The Shining at Opera Parallèle (June 2023). Most recent opera credits: Atticus Finch’s Trainer in Vinkensport by David T. Little and Royce Vavrek (April 2024) and Larry King in the world premiere of Balls (April 2024), at Opera Parallèle. His repertoire includes several premieres and roles in familiar works like: Onegin in Eugene Onegin, Dandini in La Cenerentola, Papageno in W.A. Mozart's Die Zauberflöte.
In concert, Daniel Cilli has performed with the Baltimore Symphony, Utah Symphony Orchestra, Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra, University of Missouri Orchestra and Chorus, San Juan Symphony, Earplay Ensemble, Left Coast Chamber Ensemble, i Cantori di Carmel, Espressivo Orchestra, Tanglewood Music Center (2003); and Aspen Music Festival and School (2005). He was also Project Manager at L&S Enterprises, LLC (September 2020-April 2022); Audio Describer at Oregon Shakespeare Festival (May-July 2022); Principal Artist at San Francisco Opera (August 2022-April 2023). |
