Sarah Court (Mezzo-soprano)

Born: Te Awamutu, New Zealand

The New Zealander mezzo-soprano, Sarah Court, obtained her Bachelor of Music degree with Honors from the University of Waikato; her Master of Music degree from the University of Waikato (2002-2004); her MBA degree from the University of Otago (2008-2009); and her Doctor of Musical Arts in Voice and Opera from the Griffith University: Queensland Conservatorium of Music (February 2012-June 2014). She also completed post-graduate study at the Prague Conservatorium in the Czech Republic. She is a recipient of the Dame Sister Mary Leo Scholarship and a former Emerging Artist with NBR New Zealand Opera.

Sarah Court has been a freelance musician since February 2003. She was Emerging Artist at Opera New Zealand (2003-2004); Artistic Administrator of Southern Sinfonia, Dunedin (January 2010-May 2011); Events Officer - Alumni Relations at University of Otago (July 2010-May 2011);

Solo engagements include performances with Auckland Choral Society, Auckland Philharmonic Orchestra, Christchurch Symphony Orchestra, and the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra. Recently, Sarah Court sang Octavian in the trio from Der Rosenkavalier in “An Evening with Felicity Lott”, appeared with the Melbourne Bach Choir and gave a solo recital of new art song at the Queensland Conservatorium. Recent appearances include alto soloist in a programme with Bach Musica (Auckland) and alto solo in George Frideric Handel's Messiah with Napier Civic Choir.

"Sarah Court was an outstanding alto soloist when Bach Musica gave us this work in 2010. Three years have matured her voice and musicianship. From the start, she revealed how recitatives should tell stories and even take an emotional stand while, in arias, she showed the rare ability to make the most gnarly lines seem disarmingly natural.” - New Zealand Herald, Tuesday December 10 2013, William Dart
