The Portuguese counter-tenor and research based artist, Angelo Custódio, obtained his Bachelor of Music degree in Music Performance (Classical Singing) from Amsterdamse Hogeschool voor de Kunsten (2010-2015). He also holds a MFA from Master of Voice (MoV) from Sandberg Institute (2016-2018). Since 2010, he has been working and being mentored by Pierre Mak. He has participated in several master-classes given by Emma Kirkby, Margreet Honig and Ira Siff. Subsequently Angelo has decided to follow, in parallel to the Conservatorium, Ira Siff's private lessons to explore the full range of his voice with another counter-tenor.
Angelo Custódio hase been active as a professional singer since January 2014. As a counter-tenor his priority is to understand and develop the growth of his voice. Basing his daily work on a physical awareness, in combination with a total freedom of the voice, he keeps exploring his intense and dramatic colours.
Angelo Custódio has been developing an engaged practice informed by critical theory and embodied knowledge(s). For years trained as a classical singer, he explores the performative use of the voice and perverts embodied singing techniques to develop sonic encounters with the vulnerable. These performative encounters facilitate open cracks - wild(er) spaces - that utterly welcome other embodiments and freer ecologies of living. He urges to nourish empathic understandings of identities, with a focus on the contemporary failure of support structures towards queer bodies and bodies with disability. In 2010 he founded the Driewieler Collectief in Amsterdam.
Furthermore Angelo Custódio also works as voice coach and external advisor for choreographers and theatre makers. He is currently based in Amsterdam. |
