The American soprano and music teacher, Alissa Walters Deeter, studied at Marshall High School (Class of 1987). She obtained her Bachelor of Music degree in vocal performance with a minor in theatre from Central Michigan University (Class of 1991); her a Master of Music degree in Opera Performance from Florida State University in Tallahassee (Class of 1994); and her Doctor of Music degree in Vocal Performance from Florida State University (Class of 2000).
From 2000 to 2010, Alissa Deeter served on the voice faculty at San Francisco State University as an Associate Professor of Voice. She is currently the Coordinator of Applied Voice and the Graduate Coordinator of Vocal Pedagogy at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte where she joined the faculty in fall 2010.
A nationally recognized performer with firm footing in both classical and musical theatre circles, Alissa Deeter is an active recitalist with a penchant for French mélodie as well as the treasured compositions of Gershwin, Porter, Berlin, and Weill. She was a founding member and co-director of The Miscreants Cabaret, a fringe theatre troupe in San Francisco that wrote, produced, and performed original works. She is the co-author of The Mélodies of Francis Poulenc: A Study Guide (Scarecrow Press, 2014) and has several articles published in the Journal of Singing. She recently presented the lecture recital “The Gender Gap in Francis Poulenc’s Mélodies” at the College Music Society’s International Conference in Stockholm and Helsinki.
Alissa Deeter became certified in massage therapy while attending Florida State University during her doctoral studies at Florida State and is a leader in a “form follows function” approach to singing. She is a regular presenter and conferences and academic institutions nationwide and promotes musician kinesthetic awareness and self-care. Her students have been heard at AIMS in Graz, SongFest, The Jimmy Awards, Tri Cities Opera, Opera Carolina, San Francisco Opera, San Francisco Symphony Chorus, San Jose Opera, San Diego Opera, Windy City Opera, Waffle Opera, Ray of Light Theater, Broadway by the Bay, and off- and on-Broadway. She currently lives in Harrisburg, North Carolina. |
